End Cover, with Transmission Removed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Old oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782 )

General repair information. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.

To remove the end cover, the transmission must "not" be removed.

End cover, removing with transmission installed. Refer to => [ End Cover, With Transmission Installed ] End Cover, With Transmission Installed.

Removing

Transmission fastened vertically to assembly stand. Refer to => [ Securing Transmission to Assembly Stand ] Securing Transmission to Assembly Stand.

- Place the used oil collection and extraction device (VAG 1782) under the transmission.

- Remove the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) drain plug - A - using the triple square socket driver (3357 ) and drain the ATF.





- Install and tighten the ATF drain plug.

Tightening specification: 24 Nm.

- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove the end cover.





Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal, note the following:

Replace the seals and bolts for end cover.

- Slide a new gasket - A - with the double lip outward onto the connector on the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217).





- Clean sealing surfaces on the transmission housing and end cover.

- If bushings were installed in the transmission housing or cover, they must be reinstalled in the same location.

- Place a new seal for the end cover - A - onto the transmission housing.





There are metal and paper seals.

Make sure bushings are seated properly.

- Put on the end cover and make sure the seal does not slip.

- Tighten new bolts - arrows - by hand and in a diagonal sequence, and then to tightening specifications.





- Check installation position of gasket - A -:

Gasket must fit flush (sealing lips must not be twisted).

- Fill with ATF. Refer to => [ ATF Changing or Filling after Repairs ] ATF Changing or Filling After Repairs.
