Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
Valve Stem Seals
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Spark plug removal tool (3122B)
• Valve seal removal tool (3364)
• Valve stem seal driver (3365)
• Valve cotter asm/disasm device (VAS 5161)
• Adapter (T40012)
Removing
• Engine is removed. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.
- Remove the camshafts and adjusters, refer to one of the following:
• => [ Left Camshafts and Adjuster ] Left Camshafts and Adjuster.
• => [ Right Camshafts and Adjuster ] Right Camshafts and Adjuster.
- Using the (3122B), remove the spark plugs.
- Turn the roller rocker lever upward and secure it with a rubber band.
- Place the (VAS 5161/7) from the (VAS 5161) on the cylinder head.
- Secure the (VAS 5161/7) with the (VAS 5161/12).
- Insert the (VAS 5161/3) into the guide plate and loosen the stuck valve retainers using a plastic hammer.
- Install the (VAS 5161/6) with the (VAS 5161/5) into the (VAS 5161/7).
- Guide the (VAS 5161/8) into the (VAS 5161/7).
- Install the (T40012) with gasket by hand into the respective spark plug hole and apply constant pressure.
• Minimum pressure: 6 bar pressure
- Engage the (VAS 5161/2) at the (VAS 5161/6) and press down the (VAS 5161/8).
- At the same time, turn the knurled bolt of (VAS 5161/8) to the right, until the points engage in the valve retainers.
- Lightly move the knurled bolt back and forth, causing the valve retainers to be pressed apart and be captured in the (VAS 5161/8).
- Release the pressure fork.
- Remove the (VAS 5161/8).
- Remove the (VAS 5161/7).
• Pressurized air hose remains connected.
- Remove the valve stem seal using the (3364).
Installing
• For installing the valve stem seals, the (3365) must be drilled to 6.5 mm diameter.
• A plastic sleeve - A - is supplied with the new valve stem seals.
- Place the plastic sleeve - A - on the valve stem to prevent damage to the new valve stem oil seal - B -.
- Lightly oil the valve stem seal.
- Push the valve stem seal onto the plastic sleeve.
- Carefully press the valve stem oil seal onto the valve guide using the (3365).
- Remove the plastic sleeve again.
- If the valve retainers were removed from the (VAS 5161/18), they must be inserted into (VAS 5161/18) next.
• The large diameter of the valve retainers point upward.
- Insert the valve spring and valve spring plate.
- Install the (VAS 5161/7) onto the cylinder head again.
- Install the (VAS 5161/8) into the guide plate.
- Press down the pressure fork and pull the knurled screw upward - thereby the valve retainers are inserted.
- Release the pressure fork with the knurled screws still pulled.
- Install the camshafts and adjusters, refer to one of the following:
• => [ Right Camshafts and Adjuster ] Right Camshafts and Adjuster.
• => [ Left Camshafts and Adjuster ] Left Camshafts and Adjuster.
• After installing the camshaft, the engine may not be started for approximately 30 minutes. The hydraulic adjusting elements must seat themselves (otherwise the valves will seat themselves on the pistons).
• After working on the valvetrain and lifters, carefully rotate the crankshaft by hand at least 2 full revolutions before starting to be sure that valves do not strike the pistons.
