Engine Oil Pressure: Testing and Inspection
Oil Pressure and Switch, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil pressure gauge (VAG 1342)
• Voltage tester (VAG 1527B)
• Connector test set (VAG 1594C)
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing, and information system (VAS 5051)
Test Prerequisites
• Oil level is OK
• Engine oil temperature is approximately 80° C (176° F)
Checking the Oil Pressure Switch
- Disconnect the electrical connector - arrow - from the oil pressure switch (F1).
- Remove the oil pressure switch.
- Install the (VAG 1342) with the (VAG 1342/14) to hole for the oil pressure switch.
- Install the oil pressure switch - 2 - into the (VAG 1342).
- Connect the brown wire - 1 - from the (VAG 1342) to a known good ground.
- Connect the (VAG 1527B) using adapter cables from the (VAG 1594A) to the oil pressure switch and the battery positive terminal.
• Light Emitting Diode (LED) must not light up.
- If the LED is lit, replace the oil pressure switch.
- Start the engine.
• While starting engine, watch the (VAG 1342) and LED as the oil pressure switch may open during start.
Black Oil Pressure Switch
• At 1.2 to 1.6 bar pressure, LED must light up.
- If LED is not lit, the oil pressure switch must be replaced.
Oil Pressure, Checking
- Disconnect the electrical connector - arrow - from the oil pressure switch.
- Remove the oil pressure switch.
- Connect the (VAG 1342) with the (VAG 1342/14) to the hole for the oil pressure switch.
- Install the oil pressure switch - 2 - into the (VAG 1342).
- Start the engine (engine oil temperature approximately 80° C (176° F)).
• Oil pressure at idle: at least 1.0 bar
• Oil pressure at 2000 RPM: at least 3.5 bar
