Secondary Air Injection (Air) Pump Motor and Relay, Checking
Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor and relay, checking
Note: Component locations
Required special tools and test equipment
- VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG1551/3 adapter cable
- VAG1598/22 test box
Checking
- Start output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) for Secondary air injection pump relay -J299-
Indicated on display:
Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary Air Injection
PumpRelay-J299
The Secondary air injection pump relay -J299- actuates the Secondary air injection pump motor -V101-. The motor will run for 10 seconds or until the -> button is pressed, which ends the output DTM.
If the secondary air injection pump motor does not run:
- Separate 2-pin connector from secondary air injection pump motor and connect VAG1527B LED voltage tester to harness connector terminals.
LED must blink.
If LED test light lights up.:
- Replace Secondary air injection pump motor -V101-.
If LED test light does not light up but the secondary air injection pump relay clicks:
- Check Secondary air injection pump relay -J299- fuse.
If the fuse is OK:
- Remove secondary air injection pump relay from relay panel.
CAUTION!
Before working on the electrical system:
- Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Check relay voltage supply (terminal 30) according to wiring diagram.
- If voltage is present replace Secondary air injection pump relay -J299-.
If the LED does not light up and the secondary air injection pump relay does not click:
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to ECM harness connector. Connecting VAG 1598/22 Test Box
- Connect multimeter US1119 (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to check for open circuit between test box socket 30 and terminal 6 in relay panel.
Specified value: max. 1.5 ohms
If no malfunction is indicated:
- Replace Motronic ECM -J220-.
- Perform adaptation of throttle valve control module to ECM.
- Check readiness code. Audi Drive Cycle/Readiness Code
