EGR Electronic Vacuum Regulator Solenoid: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: For a functional check of the EGR system, See Read measuring value block, display group 001.

- Disconnect EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve harness connector.

- Switch multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to measure resistance (ohms) and connect between valve terminals.
Specified value: 25 to 35 ohms

If the specified value is not obtained:
- Replace EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve.

Checking voltage supply
- Disconnect EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve harness connector.
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between connector terminal 1 (B+) and engine Ground (GND) using jumper wires from connector test kit VW 1694.
- Use scan tool "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function 03 to trigger fuel pump relay -J17-.
- Voltage tester must light up

If voltage tester does not light up:
- Check fuse for EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve.
- Check wiring for continuity between EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve connector terminal 1 and fuse, using wiring diagram.
Specified value: max. 1.0 ohms (ohms)
- Check fuel pump relay and triggering, Testing and Inspection

Checking triggering
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve connector terminals 1 (B+) and 2 using jumper wires from connector test kit VW 1594.
- Use scan tool "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function 03 to trigger EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve.
- Voltage tester must flash

If voltage tester does not flash, or lights up constantly:
- Connect VAG 1598/19 test box to ECM wiring harness.

If voltage tester lights up constantly:
- Check wiring for short to Ground (GND) between valve connector terminal 2 and test box socket E1.

If voltage tester does not flash:
- Check wiring for continuity and short to B+ between valve connector terminal 2 and test box socket E1.
Specified value: max. 1.0 ohms (ohms)

- If necessary, eliminate short or open circuit in wiring.

If wiring is OK:
- Replace ECM.
