Valve clearance, setting/adjusting

Preparatory work

Disconnect the battery negative cable. See: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
Check valve clearance, see: Valve clearance, checking, B8444S Valve Clearance, Checking.
Remove the VVT units, see: VVT unit intake camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Intake Camshaft, Replacing and VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Exhaust Camshaft, Replacing.

Adjustment

Adjusting the valve clearance
Remove the valve tappet. Read off the thickness from the underside.
Calculate the required thickness of the valve lifter to be used: the thickness of the existing valve lifter + the measured valve clearance = required valve clearance.

Note! The number on the valve lifter corresponds to the thickness of the valve lifter.

Install the correct valve tappet.

Finishing

Install the VVT units, see: VVT unit intake camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Intake Camshaft, Replacing and VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Exhaust Camshaft, Replacing.
