Oil Filter: Service and Repair






Oil/oil filter, replacing

Special tools:

Warning! Hot oil can scald. Avoid skin contact with engine oil, especially if it is dirty. Always wipe spilled oil from your hands and wash exposed skin as soon as possible with suitable cleaner and warm water. Protective gloves should be worn when working with engine oil.

Removal

Draining engine oil




Remove the oil filler cap.
Lift the vehicle according to: Jacking points, body Service and Repair.

Hint: The engine should be at operating temperature for the oil to drain more easily.

Removing the lower engine cover





Remove:
- the 6 screws
- the lower engine cover.

Draining engine oil, continued




Place a receptacle under the engine's oil sump at the oil plug.
Remove the oil plug. Scrap the gasket.

Removing the oil filter




Position the container under the oil filter.
Remove the oil filter housing. Use oil filter wrench: 999 5679 Oil filter spanner 999 5679 Oil Filter Spanner.
Refit the oil plug. Tighten as specified. Use a new sealing washer.

Removing the oil filter insert





Remove:
- the filter insert from the housing
- the O-ring that seals between the housing and the oil trough.
Allow the filter insert to drain and then discard it in an approved place.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening Torque

Installing the oil filter

Caution! Clean the housing.

Install:
- new filter insert
- new O-ring; oil in the O-ring
- the oil filter housing. Tighten.

Installing the lower engine cover





Install:
- the lower engine cover
- the 6 screws; tighten.
Lower the vehicle.

Filling with engine oil
Top up oil. See: Lubricants, Engine

Final check
Start the engine and check for leaks.
Stop the engine and give the oil time to run down in the oil sump.
Then check the oil level. Top up if required. Do not overfill.
Wipe the engine compartment clean. Make sure that the steering wheel and gear lever are clean.
