VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing

Preparatory work
Remove:
- the negative battery cable. First read: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting
- front cover. See: Camshaft chain, replacing, B8444S Removal and Replacement.
Turn the crankshaft back approximately 45°, so that the position setting tool is straight up, so that the camshafts can rotate freely.
Removing load from the camshaft/valve lifters
Turn the camshafts for cylinder head, 1-3-5-7, Bank 1, approximately 45° (clockwise).
Turn the camshafts for cylinder head, 2-4-6-8, Bank 2, approximately 10° (counter clockwise).
Removal
Removing the variable valve timing (VVT) unit
Remove:
- the cap, 4 x M6
- the 2 x M6 screws for the chain tensioner
- 2 x filter. Discarded.
Remove the caps, 8 x M6.
Note! Ensure that the camshaft is relieved from load against the valve lifters to prevent damaging the components.
Note location.
Remove:
- Camshaft
- chain tensioner, 2 x M6.
Remove:
- the center screw
- the VVT unit from the camshaft.
Installation
Note! for tightening torques, see: Tightening Torque
Installing VVT-unit
Install:
- the VVT unit on the camshaft
- the 1 x M10 screw; do not tighten.
Install:
- the chain tensioner
- the camshaft.
Note! Adjust the marking on the VVT unit to the color marking on the camshaft chain.
Install:
- the caps
- the 8 x M6 screws. Tighten, see: Tightening Torque
Install:
- new filter, x 2
- the cap, 4 x M6. Tighten, see: Tightening Torque
- the screws for the chain tensioner, 2 x M6. Tighten. See: Tightening Torque
Install position setting tool: 999 7236 Position setter 999 7236 Position Setter.
Installation
Minimize the slack of the chain on the inner camshaft chain. Use tool 999 7232 Key 999 7232 Key.
For cylinder head 1, 3, 5 and 7 (Bank1) Turn the exhaust camshaft's VVT unit, counter clockwise, until the chain is tensioned underneath.
For cylinder head 2, 4, 6 and 8 (Bank2) Turn the exhaust camshaft's VVT-unit, counter clockwise, until the chain is tensioned on top.
Pre-tighten the screw in the center of the exhaust camshaft's VVT unit. Tighten to 20 Nm.
Install tool 999 7229 Counterhold 999 7229 Counterhold.
Tighten the center screw on the camshaft, 1 x M10. See: Tightening Torque
Remove the caps, 8 x M6.
Install the front covers. See: Camshaft chain, replacing, B8444S Removal and Replacement.
