DESCRIPTION:

In certain 2005-2006 XC90 V8 vehicles, the B+ terminal cable may become loose due to improper torque at the terminal nut.

Parts Information

SERVICE:

Follow the instructions below for examining the starter cables and tightening the B+ terminal nut.

If there is tape between the terminals, remove the tape and secure the cables with a cable tie.

1. Disconnect the negative cable

Disconnect the negative battery cable. See:

Removal, replacement and installation Electrical system Battery and mounting components Battery, replacement.

2. Remove the tape if installed

Remove the tape using a knife if the B+ leads are taped up. Remove the plastic cover over the nut.

3. Check B+ cable terminal at the starter

If the B+ leads are loose on the starter terminal, remove the nut and examine the starter motor's terminal stud and the B+ cable for damage.

If damaged components are found, replace them using the appropriate repair method in VIDA before proceeding to the next step.

4. Install the cable tie

Install a tie strap at least 80 mm (3 inches) from the centerline of the B+ cable terminal as high up as possible, if not already installed. See the illustration.

5. Tightening the connection

Note!
It is important that the tightening torque is precise because the screws are made of a special alloy.

Loosen the nut (if not already performed in step 3) and retighten to 11 Nm (8.11 lb/ft) Reinstall the plastic cover.

6. Connect the battery cable

Connect the negative battery cable. See:

Removal, replacement and installation Electrical system Battery and mounting components Battery, replacement. Set the clock.
