Fault-Tracing

Fault tracing

Checking components and wiring

- Ignition off

Hint: The engine cylinders are counted from the right-hand side of the vehicle. I.E. the cylinder furthest away from the flywheel.
- Bank 1 (cylinder row nearest the front): cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7.
- Bank 2 (cylinder row furthest to the rear, nearest the passenger compartment): cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Hint: If diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored for all ignition coils, the most probable fault cause is a faulty diagnostic cable or power supply cable for the ignition coils. If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored for an individual ignition coil, the most probable cause is a faulty signal cable or ignition coil.

Check the ignition coil connector. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.
Disconnect the engine control module (ECM).
Check the diagnostic cables between the control module and the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) relevant camshaft position sensor. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Check for an open-circuit.
Measure between:
- For ignition coils cylinder 2, 3, 5 and 8: control module terminal #A62 (#B2) and relevant ignition coil terminal #2.
- For ignition coils cylinder 1, 4, 6 and 7: control module terminal #A64 (#B4) and relevant ignition coil terminal #2.
Check the voltage supply cable between the system relay and the relevant ignition coil terminal #1. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for an open-circuit.
Check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) relevant signal cable. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Check for an open-circuit.
Measure between:
- Control module #A60 (#A60) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 1.
- Control module #A61 (#B1) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 2.
- Control module #A58 (#A58) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 3.
- Control module #A59 (#A59) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 4.
- Control module #A56 (#A56) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 5.
- Control module #A57 (#A57) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 6.
- Control module #A54 (#A54) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 7.
- Control module #A55 (#A55) and #4 for ignition coil cylinder 8.
Remedy as necessary.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition off
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Start the engine.
Check that the engine is firing on all cylinders and is not misfiring.

Is the engine running on all cylinders?

Yes - Troubleshooting procedure complete

No - Fault-tracing information

Information

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?

Yes - Exit Fault-tracing

No - Attempt New Test
