Fault-Tracing
Fault tracing
Checking the status
- Start the engine.
Read the diagnostic status and fault status for the diagnostic trouble code by selecting the diagnostic trouble code in the list.
Increase the engine speed a few times until the scan is "Implemented".
Check whether the fault is permanent or intermittent. Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) fault status when the diagnostic status is "Completed".
The fault is permanent if the fault status is "Fault found". If the fault status is "No fault found" the fault is intermittent and not presently active.
Note! The fault status cannot change from "Fault found" to "No fault found" in the same operating cycle.

Hint: Bank 1 (cylinder row nearest the front): cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7.
Bank 2 (cylinder row furthest to the rear, nearest the passenger compartment): cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8.
- Ignition off
- Disconnect the engine control module (ECM).
Check the signal cable between the control module and the connector for the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) relevant camshaft position sensor. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Check for an open-circuit.
Measure between:
- Control module terminal #A33 (#A33) and camshaft position sensor terminal #3 inlet, bank 1 (ECM-P034000).
- Control module terminal #A34 (#A34) and camshaft position sensor terminal #3 inlet, bank 2 (ECM-P034500).
- Control module terminal #A31 (#A31) and camshaft position sensor terminal #3 exhaust, bank 1 (ECM-P036500).
- Control module terminal #A32 (#A32) and camshaft position sensor terminal #3 exhaust, bank 2 (ECM-P039000).
Check the voltage supply cable between the control module and the connector for the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) relevant camshaft position sensor. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Check for an open-circuit.
Measure between:
- Control module terminal #A72 (#B12) and camshaft position sensor terminal #1.
Check the ground lead between the control module and the connector for the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) relevant camshaft position sensor. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Check for an open-circuit.
Measure between:
- Control module terminal #A07 (#A7) and camshaft position sensor terminal #2.
Remedy as necessary.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.
- Ignition off
- Reconnect the connectors, components, etc.
- Start the engine.
- Read the diagnostic status and fault status for the diagnostic trouble code by selecting the diagnostic trouble code in the list.
Increase the engine speed a few times until the scan is "Implemented".
Check the fault status for the diagnostic trouble code when the scan is "Implemented". When the function is correct the fault status should be "No fault found" when the scan is implemented.
Is the function OK?
Yes - Troubleshooting procedure complete
No - Fault-tracing information

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.
Do you want to exit fault-tracing?
Yes - Exit Fault-tracing
No - Attempt New Test
