Compress the spring
Compress the spring. Use spring clamps 999 5409 CLAMPING TOOL 999 5409 Clamping Tool.
Position the spring clamps exactly opposite each other.
The clamps must grip across as many coils as possible.
Alternately tight the spring clamps until the spring is loose.
Note! Spring clamps must always be slacked off or tightened alternately.
Disassemble the shock absorber
Remove the shock absorber nut.
Remove the ring, the upper spring cover, the rubber and the spring.
Check the parts for wear and damage.
Reinstall the coil spring
Carefully relieve the load from the spring. Position tool 999 5409 CLAMPING TOOL 999 5409 Clamping Tool on the new spring.
Position the spring clamps exactly opposite each other.
The clamps must grip across as many coils as possible.
Tighten the spring clamps alternately.
Assemble the shock absorber
Pull the piston rod as far out of the shock absorber as possible.
Install the spring and the rubber.
Position the spring cover. Ensure that it is positioned parallel with the mounting for the shock absorber (the maximum permitted deviation is 3°).
Ensure that the ends of the spring are completely inside the spring caps.
Position the ring. Install a new nut.
Tighten to 25 Nm.
Check the shock absorber
Remove the spring clamps. Check that the Silicon sealing is intact.
Caution! Damaged Silicon sealing (A) can cause leakage!
Install the upper section of the rear shock absorber
Position the shock absorber. Ensure that the end of the lower spiral is pointing towards the rear of the car.
Install the upper nuts for the shock absorber. Tighten to 50 Nm. Use new nuts.
Install the protective cap. Reinstall all removed components. See Removing and installing side panels in the cargo compartment, S40 .

Then tighten crosswise. Tighten to 110 Nm.
If a socket wrench is used, torque socket 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque Socket 21mm must be used.
Post tighten the nuts by hand.
Caution! The correct torques and crosswise tightening are essential to avoid stresses in the brake disc.
Install the hub cap.
Tighten the lower control arm
Remove the support and bounce the car a few times.
Secure the anti-roll bar.
Tighten:
- the screw C. Tighten to 25 Nm
- the screw B on the trailing arm. Tighten to 90 Nm
