Removing the spring strut
Note! From model year 2001, the spring type installed in the car is shown on the car identification plate. For information about the car spring type, see Identifying the chassis type Application and ID.
Raise the car. Remove the wheel.
Remove:
- the clamp and brake hose from the bracket
- the ABS cable from the bracket
- the anti-roll bar link from the spring strut
- the two screws for the wheel spindle
- the wheel spindle from the spring strut
- the three nuts. Remove the spring strut.
Assembling the special tool
Secure tool 951 2911 Hydraulic piston 951 2911 Hydraulic Piston in a vise.
Install both the spring holders 951 2914 Claw 951 2914 Claw.
Remove the catch. Raise the spring holders. Reinstall the catch. If necessary, remove the other holders first.
Connect tool 951 2564 Hydraulic tool 951 2564 Hydraulic Tool or 999 5576 HYDRAULIC PUMP 999 5576 Hydraulic Pump to connecting hose 951 2915 Hydraulic hose 951 2915 Hydraulic Hose.
Disassembling the spring strut
- Hook the hooks on the tool over as many spring spirals as possible
- Compress the spring by pumping the tool, always ensuring that the spring is correctly positioned in the catches
- Compress the spring until it is released.
Hint: Note the position of the components. This will make installation easier.
- Remove the dust boot
- Remove the nut using special tool 999 5500 SOCKET UPPER NUT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER 999 5500 Socket Upper Nut Rear Shock Absorber (socket) and 999 5758 Wrench 999 5758 Wrench.
Remove:
- the spring strut mounting
- the bearing
- the support plate
- the spring
- the stop and the dust boot.
Checking the spring strut
- Remove the bump stop from the dust boot
- Check all components for wear. Replace as necessary.
Replacing the spring
- Remove the spring
- Remove the spring. Note the location
- Install the new spring with as many turns as possible between the spring holders
- Tension the spring so that the shock absorber mounting can be installed again.
Note! The color code on the spring must be downwards towards the spring strut.
Assembling the spring strut
Caution! If the car is a "Sport" or "Dynamic" version, the spring plates are installed at an angle of 20°.To identify the spring type, see Identifying the chassis type Application and ID.To assemble the spring strut for "Sport" or "Dynamic" models, see Spring strut front (Sport/Dynamic), assembling Overhaul.
Lubricate the stop using petroleum jelly. Install the stop in the dust boot.
Pull out the shock absorber rod completely.
Install:
- the rubber stop and dust boot
- the rubber on the underneath
- the spring strut through the spring
- the rubber on top
- the upper spring seat
- the mounting
- the upper mounting for the spring strut
- the nut. Finger tighten.
Install the upper spring seat so that the holes in both the spring seats line up.
Carefully release the spring and check that is correctly positioned in the stop at the spring seats.
Use special tool 999 5500 SOCKET UPPER NUT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER 999 5500 Socket Upper Nut Rear Shock Absorber and 999 5758 Wrench 999 5758 Wrench. Tighten the nut. Tighten to 65 Nm.
Coat the bearing in grease.
Install dust cover.
Remove the spring strut from the special tool.
Installing the spring strut
Install the spring strut. Tighten the three nuts by hand.
Install the two screws for the wheel spindle. Tighten to 90 Nm.
Install:
- the link for the anti-roll bar. Tighten to 45 Nm
- the brake hose and the ABS cable in the bracket

- the three nuts. Tighten to 40 Nm.
