Replacing The Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)

Special Tools:
999 2901

Removing the front exhaust pipe from the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)
Removing the front exhaust pipe
Raise the car.
Apply rust solvent to all components.





Remove:
- the rear engine cover
- the nuts and the front exhaust pipe
- the gasket
- the lower (rear) heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
Lower the car.

Removing the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)





Remove:
- the heat shield from the car body
- the upper (front) heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- the nuts. Lift out the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)
- the gasket.

Installing the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)
Clean the mating surfaces.





Install:
- the gasket on the turbocharger (TC)
- the three-way catalytic converter (TWC). The nuts.
Tighten to 30 Nm.

Installing the front (upper) heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)





- Install a new sealing ring
- Apply copper paste (P/N 1161035-9) to the entire length of the screw thread
- To avoid damage from twisting to the cable harness for the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), turn the probe approximately 4 turns counter-clockwise before inserting it
- Install the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Tighten to 55 Nm
- Install the heat shield on the body. Raise the car.

Installing the rear (lower) heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)





- Install a new sealing ring
- Apply copper paste (P/N 1161035-9) to the entire length of the screw thread
- To avoid damage from twisting to the cable harness for the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), turn the probe approximately 4 turns counter-clockwise before inserting
- Install the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Tighten to 55 Nm.

Installing the front exhaust pipe on the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)





Clean the mating surfaces.
- Install a new gasket
- Secure the front exhaust pipe to the manifold. Tighten the nuts. Tighten to 25 Nm
- Reinstall the splash guard.

Check the function
Start the engine. Check that there is no leakage.
