Checking the Heated Rear Window (without RTI)

Checking the heated rear window (without RTI)

Checking the equipment
The following types of trouble-shooting ONLY apply to cars without road traffic information (RTI).

Is the test relevant?

Yes - Checking the main fuse and wires

No - No Fault Found

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the main fuse and wires
Check that rear main fuse 11E/5 is intact.

Check the wires between:
the rear main fuse 11E/5 #2 and relay 2/82 #5
the relay 2/82 #5 and #1
for an open circuit as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault , and for a short circuit to ground as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Do the necessary corrective action.

Additional information:
- For information about signals and other values, see Signal specification Signal Specification
- To access relay/fuse box in the boot, see Integrated relay/fusebox cargo compartment/Rear electronic module (REM), replacing Integrated Relay/Fusebox Cargo Compartment/Rear Electronic Module (REM), Replacing.

Is there a fault?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Checking the relay

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the relay
Check the relay 2/82 function by activating and deactivating the relay several times. The relay is working if a clicking noise is heard when activating and deactivating.
If the relay is not working, replace it with a new relay.

Additional information:
- To access relay/fuse box in the boot, see Integrated relay/fusebox cargo compartment/Rear electronic module (REM), replacing Integrated Relay/Fusebox Cargo Compartment/Rear Electronic Module (REM), Replacing.

Is there a fault?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Checking the wires and components

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the wires and components
Check the wire between relay 2/82 #3 and the broad flat pin on the red radio aerial amplifier in the left D-pillar for an open circuit as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and a short circuit to ground as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the copper tab between the red radio aerial amplifier in the left D-pillar and the rear window heating elements for an open circuit as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and a short circuit to ground as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the grounding of the heating elements in the right D pillar to the ground point for an open circuit, as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the heating elements for an open circuit, as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. Test between the copper tabs in the left and right D pillar.

Hint: An open circuit can only be detected if none of the heating elements work.

If only a few of the heating elements are defective they can be identified by activating the heated rear window and then breathing on the rear window heating elements one at a time. The mist disappears faster from a heating element that is working.
Do the necessary corrective action.

Additional information:
- For information about signals and other values, see Signal specification Signal Specification
- To access the radio aerial amplifier, see Windshield antenna / amplifier, CD player, replacing Windshield Antenna / Amplifier, CD Player, Replacing.
- To replace the rear window, see Rear window removal Rear Window Removal.
- Fault-free heating elements have a resistance of 0.41 ohm at 20 degrees C (68 degrees F). If the resistance is higher then one or more heating element is defective.

Is there a fault?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - No Fault Found
