DESCRIPTION:

Poor driveability after cold start on MY 02 5-cylinder non-turbo engines may be experienced. Initial start is always good but the following symptoms could occur after start:

1. Rough running / misfire during idle just after cold start.

2. Stalling when coming to a stop most common during engine warm up but also possible with engine at operating temperature.

3. Hesitation / stalling during engine warm up when the vehicle is put in gear and light throttle is applied.

These conditions can be caused by faulty operation of the CVVT function.

SERVICE:

If symptoms # 1 and / or # 2 are experienced the CVVT solenoid if the most likely cause. To verify the correct operation of the CVVT follow the instructions below.

1. Using VADIS go to extended diagnostic trouble code reading and see if there are any pending DTCs. If any of the following codes are present ECM 3502, 3503, 640A or 640F replace the CVVT solenoid.

2. If no codes are found monitor the CVVT function during a cold start. Use the graphic display in VADIS and select 'Camshaft control duty cycle, actual value' and 'Camshaft duty cycle, desired value'. Select 'Auto Range'. Start the car with a cold engine coolant temperature below 30 deg. C and allow the engine to idle for 10-20 seconds. Increase engine RPM just enough so that the desired value changes. If the actual value does not follow the desired value within a few degrees (CA) replace the CVVT solenoid.

If symptom # 3 is experienced upgrade software should be downloaded into the ECM.

On a S60 MY02 the ECM should be upgraded with the new Quality Upgrade Software Function Id 878 or P/N 30646850.

To verify if Function Id 878 (P/N 30646850) has been downloaded to a car ONE of following unique SW P/N should be possible to read out from ECM via VADIS:

30646862, 30646865, 30646882, 30646885

On a V70 MY02 the ECM has to be upgraded with the new Quality Upgrade Software Function Id 879 or P/N 30646851. To verity if Function Id 879 (P/N 30646851) has been downloaded to a car ONE of following unique SW P/N should be possible to read out from ECM via VADIS:

30646862, 30646865, 30646882, 30646885
