Steering Wheel Module And Steering Wheel

Preparations
Prepare the car.
Removing The Steering Wheel Module
- Remove the steering column covers.
- Turn the ignition switch to position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged
- Slacken off the two Torx 30 screws (angled at 45°) on the reverse of the steering wheel
- Disconnect the SRS switches (A) from the steering wheel module by pressing the catches on the side
- Carefully pull the switch straight out. Do not use tools which can damage the switch.
- Remove the steering wheel module
- Place the steering wheel module with the switch side downwards in a safe place. The steering wheel module must not covered with anything
Connecting Special Tool 951 1506 To The Steering Wheel Module Connectors
- Connect special tool 951 1506 to the two steering wheel module connectors.
- Connecting the tool makes it possible to drive the car without the SRS on-board diagnostic (OBD) system registering a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
- If the ignition is switched on when neither the steering wheel module nor special tool are connected, an open-circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored. (diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) must be erased)
Installing The Steering Wheel Module
CAUTION: Disconnect the battery negative lead.
- Remove special tool 951 1506
- Turn the ignition switch to position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged
- Reconnect the connector (A) to the steering wheel module.
Check the lock
- Reinstall the steering wheel module in the steering wheel
- Turn the steering wheel to gain access to the screws. Tighten to 10 Nm
- Install the steering column covers.
Check that:
- The steering wheel can be turned easily
- The steering wheel lock functions correctly
- The steering wheel module is correctly secured.
WARNING: Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.
Turn the ignition switch to II.
Connect the battery negative terminal
Enter the anti-theft radio code.
Set the correct time on the clock.
Check the horn.
Check that the SRS indicator lamp goes out after approximately 10 seconds.
Installing The SRS Airbag Date Decal
Do not forget to replace the steering wheel module decal on the driver's side C-post with the new decal supplied with the new module.
Preparations
- Make a note of the anti-theft radio code
- Switch off the ignition
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
NOTE: Wait at least 5 minutes before starting to disconnect electrical units.
Removing The Steering Wheel
- Remove the steering wheel module
- Disconnect the switch for the horn (B)
- Lock the steering wheel lock
- Slacken off the center nut on the steering wheel
- Open the steering wheel lock
- Position the car with the wheels pointing straight ahead
- Mark out the steering wheel and steering shaft positions so that the original positions can be obtained on reinstallation
- Remove the center nut. Lift out the steering wheel by twist and work it loose
- Remove special tool 951 1506.
Installing The Steering Wheel
- Before installing the steering wheel, the contact reel must be placed in its center position.
- When checking the center position, the black dot on the yellow indicator must be directly opposite the center arrow.
- If the center position is indicated, it must be possible to turn the inner part of the contact reel approximately 2 turns both clockwise and counterclockwise from the indicated middle position.
- If the center position is incorrectly indicated, it can be adjusted.
- To adjust the center position, first turn the inner part of the contact reel counter-clockwise to its limit position, where resistance will be felt.
- From this position, turn the inner part of the contact reel clockwise slightly more than two turns.
- Adjust the yellow indicator by turning until the black dot is directly opposite the center arrow.
- Route the wiring for the contact reel through the hole in the steering wheel.
NOTE: Transfer the marking from the old steering wheel to the new steering wheel before installation.
Install:
- the steering wheel in the correct position as marked
- the center nut. Finger tighten
- special tool 951 1506 on the two steering wheel module connectors.
Tighten the center nut. Tighten to 43 Nm.
Install the switch for the horn (B).
Install the steering wheel module.
Installing The SRS Airbag Date Decal
Do not forget to replace the steering wheel module decal on the driver's side B-post with the new decal supplied with the new module.
