Piston / cover, back-up (reverse) servo, replacing

Note! The back-up (reverse) servo is located up on the transmission under the fuel rail and the coolant hose. The transmission must be separated from the engine to access the back-up (reverse) servo.

Note! Read through the instructions before beginning work.

Caution! Cleanliness is extremely important when working on automatic transmissions. Use lint free paper or rags.

Removal

Removing the transmission




Remove the transmission.
Wipe and blow clean around the cover for the back-up servo.

Removing the back-up servo




Push the spring clip (holding the cover) forward, so that the cut-out aligns with the cut-out in the transmission housing.

Releasing the spring clip




Press the piston down a little using a jointed socket wrench.
Pry up the locking catch using a screwdriver.
Pick up the cover and the piston.

Replacing the cover




Replace the cover.
Install a new O-ring.

Installation

Installing the cover on the transmission





Hint: Two people are required to install the spring clip.

Apply a little petroleum jelly to the O-ring on the cover. Use Volvo Genuine parts petroleum jelly (P/N 116 1151-4).
Install the cover (carefully) and press it down towards the piston, as far as it will go.

Installing the spring clip




Hold the cover depressed. Install the spring clip end in the groove a little way outside the cut out.
Then press down the spring clip, so that it locks the cover.
