Checking engagement time

Hint: The check provides information about the condition of the brakes and clutches.

Note! Carry out several tests and work from the average value obtained. Allow one minute to elapse between each test. Always check oil level first. The transmission must be at normal operating temperature (over 50°C).

Preparations
Set parking brake
Start engine and check idling speed.

Measuring engagement time from N to D
Move gear selector from N to D and use a stopwatch to measure the time which elapses between shifting and engagement (a short jolt).
This time should be: less than 0.7 seconds.
Repeat the procedure several times and calculate an average value.

Measuring engagement time from N to R
Repeat procedure according to Preparations and Measuring engagement time from N to D but move gear selector from N to R.
This time should be less than 1.2 seconds.

Engagement time too long
If engagement time is too long, replace transmission according to Replacing the transmission, AW50-42 Replacing Transmission.
