Removing the shock absorber
Remove:
- the side panel, see (S40) or (V40)
- insulation
- the protective cap
- the two nuts.
Loosening the anti-roll bar
Remove the rear anti-roll bar mountings on the left and right.
Removing the lower mounting for the shock absorber
Remove the following items:
- the screw for the lower control arm.
- the screw for the shock absorber.
Assembling special tools
Secure the tool 951 2911 Hydraulic piston 951 2911 Hydraulic Piston in a vise.
Install both the spring holders 951 2912 Claw 951 2912 Claw.
Remove the catch, move up the spring holders and reinstall the catch. If necessary, first remove the other holders.
Connect tool 951 2564 Hydraulic tool 951 2564 Hydraulic Tool or 999 5576 HYDRAULIC PUMP 999 5576 Hydraulic Pump to clutch hose 951 2915 Hydraulic hose 951 2915 Hydraulic Hose.
Compressing springs
- Place the tool's hooks over the 7 coils on the spring (6 coils for Nivomat).
- Compress the spring by pumping the tool, always ensuring that the spring is correctly positioned in the catches.
- Compress the spring until it is released.
Removing the shock absorber
Remove:
- the nut for the shock absorber
- the shock absorber
- dust cover
- rubber stop.
Hint: Note the locations of the components. This will make facilitate installation.
Check all components for wear and damage.
Installing the spring
- Release the spring.
- Remove the spring. Note the location.
- Place the tool's hooks over the 7 coils on the new spring (6 coils for Nivomat).
- Tension the spring so that the shock absorber mounting can be installed again.
Note! The color code on the spring must be downwards towards the spring strut.
Assembling the shock absorber and spring
Pull the shock absorber piston out as far as possible.
Install:
- the rubber stop and dust boot
- the shock absorber through the spring
- the upper spring cover. Ensure that it is parallel (maximum 3°deviation) to the shock absorber mounting.
Check that the ends of the spring are completely inside the spring caps.
Install the ring and a new nut. Tighten to 30 Nm (Nivomat shock absorber: 25 Nm).
Checking shock absorbers
Slowly let the spring expand. Check that all components are then in the correct position.
Remove the shock absorber. Check that the rubber ring (A) is in position on the upper spring cover.
Caution! Incorrect installation of the rubber ring (A) may result in leakage.
Installing the upper mounting for the shock absorber
Install:
- the shock absorber in the car. Ensure that the end of the lower spiral is pointing backwards
- the upper nuts for the shock absorber. Use new nuts and tighten to 50 Nm.
- the protective cap
- insulation
- the side panel, see (S40) or (V40)
Installing the lower mounting for the shock absorber
Note! Check that the lowest end of the spring is pointing backwards.
Install the screw in the lower control arm.
Press down the entire suspension.
Install the screw for the shock absorber.
Tighten the nuts (A) and (B). Use new nuts.
Installing wheels
Check that the brake disc and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean. Lubricate the hub center guide using installation paste (P/N 1161397).
Install the wheel. Tighten the nuts lightly.
Tighten crosswise to 110 Nm.
If an impact wrench is used, torque socket 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 must be used.
Post tighten the nuts by hand.
Caution! The correct torques and crosswise tightening are essential to avoid stresses in the brake disc.
Install the hub cap.
Tightening the lower control arm
Remove the support and bounce the car a few times.
Secure the anti-roll bar. Tighten to 25 Nm.
Tighten:
- the screw on the trailing arm to 90 Nm.
- the screw on the shock absorber to 90 Nm.
