Removal
Removing spring strut:
Remove:
Raise the vehicle.
Remove:
- the wheel
- the clamp and brake hose from the bracket
- ABS-line
- the anti-roll bar from the spring strut
- the two screws for the wheel spindle
- the wheel spindle from the spring strut
- the three nuts. Remove the spring strut.
Removing the spring
Secure 951 2911 Hydraulic piston 951 2911 Hydraulic Piston and 951 2938 counterhold, spring strut 951 2938 Counterhold, Spring Strut in a vice. Be careful, the tools are heavy. Secure the spring strut on 951 2938 counterhold, spring strut 951 2938 Counterhold, Spring Strut. Lock the spring strut on the wheel spindle with the screws.
Note! Install the safety strap.
Install 951 2914 Claw 951 2914 Claw across as many spring revolutions as possible.
Compress:
- the spring. Check that the spring has the right position in the claw
- the spring until it releases from the upper seat.
Note! Note position of the parts. This will make installation easier.
Remove:
- the dust cover
- the nut. Use 999 5500 SOCKET UPPER NUT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER 999 5500 Socket Upper Nut Rear Shock Absorber and 999 5758 Wrench 999 5758 Wrench
- the upper bracket for the spring strut
- the bearing
- the upper spring seat
- the spring
- the spring stop and the gaiter.
Release the spring.
Remove the spring and note its position.
Checking components
Remove the spring stop from the gaiter.
Check wear of all components. Replace as needed.
Installation
Installing the spring
Note! The color code on the spring must face down against the spring strut.
Install:
- the rubber liner on the underside
- the spring
Install 951 2914 Claw 951 2914 Claw across as many spring revolutions as possible.
Check that the spring has the right position in the claw. Compress the spring.
Lubricate the stop with soapy water. Install the stop on the gaiter.
Install:
- the spring stop and the gaiter
- the bushing (lubricate the bushing with soapy water)
- the upper spring seat
- the support plate
- the upper bracket for the spring strut
- the nut. Tighten with your fingers
- the upper spring seat so that the holes in both spring seats are in line.
Release the spring carefully. Check that the spring's end has the right position in the stop and spring seats.
Use 999 5500 SOCKET UPPER NUT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER 999 5500 Socket Upper Nut Rear Shock Absorber and 999 5758 Wrench 999 5758 Wrench. Tighten the nut. Tighten to 65 Nm.
Grease the bearing.
Install the dust cover.
Remove the spring strut from the tool.
Installing spring strut
Install:
- the spring strut. Tighten the three nuts by hand
- the two screws for the wheel spindle. Tighten to 90 Nm
- the anti-roll bar. Tighten to 45 Nm
- the brake hose and ABS-line on the bracket
- the three nuts. Tighten to 40 Nm.
Fitting the wheel
Install the wheel.
Check that the contact face between the brake disc and rim is clean.
Grease the hub guide for the rims that are going to have installation paste (part no. 116 1397).
Install the wheel. Tighten the nuts by hand.
Cross-tighten. Tighten to 110 Nm.
When the nuts are tightened with an air-powered nut runner, use 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40. Pre-tighten with hand tool.
Note! Correct tightening torque and cross-tightening are important to avoid stresses in the brake disc.
Install the hub cap.
