Steering Angle Sensor: Service and Repair

Steering Wheel Module, Steering Wheel And Contact Reel, Replacement

Special tools: 998 8695

NOTE: During work that involves removing the steering wheel and/or contact reel, it is important that the steering wheel be installed such that it is located correctly with regard to the front wheels and that the contact reel is set in the middle position. The contact reel is supplied in the middle position with a locking screw installed. If this locking screw is unfastened the contact reel has to be zeroed again.

CAUTION: The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is removed or replaced.

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to measure the resistance in the steering wheel module. The cabling may not be tested with a connected steering wheel module because this could be deployed.

Adjusting steering wheel position

- The steering wheel position is adjusted in accordance with (B1), (B2), (B4), (B8) and (B9).

Preparations

- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio installed.
- Turn ignition off.
- Disconnect battery negative lead.

Removing steering wheel module

- Turn the ignition key to position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged.
- Undo the two torx screws (Tx 30) on back of steering wheel.
- Turn the steering wheel to access the screws.
- Release the connector and remove the steering wheel module.
- For handling a non-deployed steering wheel module.

Connecting special tool 998 8695 to the steering wheel module connector

- Connect special tool 998 8695 to the steering wheel module connector. This is so the car can be driven without the SRS on-board diagnostic (OBD) system storing a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
- If the ignition is switched on when neither special tool or steering wheel module are connected, an open-circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored. (Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) must be cleared.)

Removing the steering wheel

- Position the car with the wheels pointing straight ahead.
- Undo the steering wheel center bolt.
- Lock the steering wheel.
- Remove the bolt which is in the plastic strip from the steering wheel and turn this to locking position (I) to secure the contact reel.
- Mark the steering wheel and steering wheel shaft with a view to reinstalling them.
- Remove the central nut and take the steering wheel off (wiring/pull and lift it off).
- Remove special tool 998 8695.

CAUTION: Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked as the contact reel pin will break off.

- The orange connector.
- The torx screws (2x).
- The contact reel, pressing down on the mounting tab.
- The signal horn cable connector.

Setting the contact reel into the middle position

- Turn the contact reel hilly to the right.
- Turn the contact reel approximately three times to the left.
- The slot of the screw must then be in the 1 o'clock position, as illustrated.
- Secure the contact reel in this position with the locking screw.

Install contact reel

- Connect the orange connector to the contact reel.
- Put the contact reel in place and press it well into the mounting tab. Tighten the screws for the contact reel with 1.8 ft.lbf.
- Attach the signal horn cable connector.
- Ensure that no cabling is jammed.
