Sensor Module, Replacement
Replacing sensor module
Special tools: 981 4071
CAUTION: The battery must not be connected when the sensor module is removed or installed.
Preparations
- Make a note of the anti-theft radio code.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
Removing the rear center console
Remove:
- the waste paper basket and/or can holder.
- the two screws at the rear edge.
- the rubber strip and the screw at the front edge.
- the bracket.
Remove the front center console
- Remove the two screws at the rear edge.
- Remove the panel for the gear selector lever.
- Cars with manual transmission: press the panel forward and pull it out from the rear.
- Cars with automatic transmission: carefully remove the panel using a weatherstrip tool 981 4071 Remove the lamp.
- Remove the panel with the switches. Disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the radio bracket.
- Remove the lower center compartment (if applicable).
- Remove the ashtray.
- Remove the two screws. Pull out the holder.
- Remove the connectors.
Removing the front center console
- Press out the switch. Disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the panel with the switches. Disconnect the connectors.
- Fully apply the parking brake.
- Pull out the bracket from behind by twisting it.
- Insert the gear selector lever boot through the bracket.
Removing the sensor module
- Remove the lock catch for the connector.
- Disconnect the sensor module connector.
- Remove the three mounting screws.
CAUTION: Avoid touching the terminal pins on the sensor module. There is a risk of static discharge which could damage the sensor module.
Installing the sensor module
- Position the sensor module. Tighten the three screws to 10 Nm.
- Use the old screws When using replacement screws, use a type approved for connection to ground.
- Install the connector. Secure it in position.
CAUTION: Do not damage the screw threads when installing the screws. Ensure that the screws are straight.
- It is important that the sensor module is securely mounted onto the bodywork if it is to operate properly. Otherwise the sensor unit will register the moment that the vehicle begins to slow down; not the moment of impact.
- The electrical connection to ground is through the ground terminal which is fixed by one mounting screw. It is very important that the mounting screws are in good contact with the bodywork.
Installing center consoles
- The front and rear console are reinstalled in reverse order.
