Auxiliary Cabin Heater Control Module: Testing and Inspection

Programming the control module

General information about programming, Additional heater

Note! Before replacing a control module, the programmed data must be read off first if this is possible. This is so that the new control module can be programmed with the same data.

Caution! To communicate with parking heater 912B installed in cars with chassis numbers to 314999 inclusive and in cars with chassis numbers 315000 and later where the early heater unit (30863852) is installed, a special diagnostic cable 951 1520 Diagnostic lead 951 1520 Diagnostic Lead must be used. In certain cars communication with the parking heater cannot be established when the ignition is switched on because of the absence of a +15 voltage supply. To communicate with this type of heater it must be started or an attempt to start it must be made using the timer. Individual components and functions cannot be activated when the +15 voltage supply is absent.

The additional heater control module can be programmed with certain data. The aim with this programming is set up the additional heater function according to the customer's requirement. The programmable data is the adaptation of the start temperature.
The start temperature is the highest outside temperature at which the additional heater can start. At outside temperatures above the programmed value the heater cannot start. This does not apply to the parking heater function.

-------------------------------------------------

Programming the outside temperature

- Ignition on
- Select the VCT2000 symbol to read off the initial field value for the outside temperature. Make a note of the value. Program as necessary.
The temperature is programmable between 0° and +10°C in steps of 1°C.

Note! The outside temperature (start temperature) for the additional heater can be reprogrammed. The start value can be set in the temperature range 0°C to +10°C. The factory setting is +4°C. This allows the start temperature to be adjusted to the customer wishes. If the customer experiences poor heating in the passenger compartment, the start temperature can be raised so that the heater starts at a higher outside temperature. It is recommended that the temperature is raised or lowered approximately 3°C for a noticeable difference. If the additional heater seems to start too often at too high an outside temperature, the start temperature can be lowered.

Communication fault

Communication fault

Communication fault
Communication has been interrupted for one of the following reasons:
- The ignition is switched off
- VCT2000 disconnected from the data link connector (DLC)
- VCT2000 disconnected from the VIDA cart
- Communication problems in VIDA application or in car.
- No voltage in the data link connector (DLC).

Check therefore:
- That the control module power supply and ground terminal are fault-free.
- That the fuse for the data link connector (DLC) is intact.
- that the ignition is on
- that the battery voltage (system voltage) is normal (approximately 12 V).
If necessary a battery charger can be connected during the test.
For information about charge currents and the battery, see: Battery, charging Battery, Charging
- that VCT2000 is correctly connected to the VIDA cart and the data link connector (DLC)
- that VCT2000 and the wiring is fault-free.

Other information
- For information about fuse and terminal numbers, see the relevant Wiring Diagram.
Try to establish communication again or exit reading off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Depending on the communication fault, select one of the following options.
1. Try again
2. Fault-trace more comprehensively for the communication problem that has occurred
3. Exit fault-tracing / Read off from the next system.

Checking communication

Checking communication errors car model S40 (-04) / V40

Hint: Test the communication with another corresponding vehicle to decide if the malfunction is in the vehicle or in VIDA/VCT/cable harness. If the communication works on another vehicle, the malfunction is in the vehicle.

Hint: For current information about each circuit and signals, see wiring diagram and signal description for each system.

Diagnostic outlet
- Check the voltage feed to diagnostic outlet #16. The voltage shall match battery voltage.
- Check the cable for power ground and signal ground to diagnostic outlet #4 and #5.

Hint: When VCT2000 is connected to the diagnostic outlet (is supplied with voltage), the indicator diode shall be activated with a green light. Then the indicator diode flashes quickly when communication takes place with a control module. In case of certain internal malfunctions on VCT2000 the indicator diode is activated with a red light!

Communication cables k-line
- Check the communication cables between diagnostic outlet #7 and connected control modules for open circuit, short-circuit to ground and short-circuit to voltage.

Communication cable for cruise control as own system (not integrated)
- Check the communication cable between diagnostic outlet #13 and cruise control for open circuit, short-circuit to ground and short-circuit to voltage according to references above.

Communication cable for engine management system Fenix 5.1 and diesel (not Lucas)
- Check the communication cables between diagnostic outlet #11/#15 and engine control module (ECM) for open circuit, short-circuit to ground and short-circuit to voltage according to references above.

Control modules
- Check that the control module's voltage feed and ground connection are trouble-free.

VCT2000 and cable harness
- Connect VCT2000 to the vehicle so that it is supplied with voltage. Test VCT2000 by selecting the system's self-test and VCT Test in the VIDA main menu. If any malfunction is found according to the test, first replace the cable harness then the VCT2000, if the test still indicates a malfunction.
- If no malfunctions were found after troubleshooting according to above, try with a new cable harness and/or new VCT2000.

VIDA
- If no malfunctions were found after troubleshooting according to above, try performing a complete system reset of VIDA.
