Replacing Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) control module
Removing ABS control module
Switch off ignition.
Open the hood.
Cars with turbo engine:
- Remove the cover panels above the ABS unit and above the right headlamp.
Cars with air-conditioning
Note! For cars with B4184SM engine you don't have to remove the AC pipe attachments.
Remove the low pressure AC pipe from the supports
- Remove the front AC pipe support (only valid for turbo engines).
Remove the coolant hose out of the clips.
Remove the windshield washer fluid hoses out of the clips.
Remove both brake pipe brackets on the inside of the front wing.
Remove the two bolts of the power steering fluid reservoir.
Carefully clean the complete ABS unit.
Disconnect the connector.
Remove the two nuts from the support and remove the ABS unit from the support.
Remove the two bolts and remove the support.
Lift the ABS unit as far as possible and move it carefully towards the engine as far as possible.
Note! Avoid bending the AC pipe on its connections.
Disconnect the lower connector (A) and remove the two cables from the control module.
Remove torx 20 (6x) of the control module.
Carefully remove the control module from the hydraulic module.
Note! Watch out not to loose the leaf spring (if present) between the hydraulic module and the control module.
Installing ABS control module
Caution! Never use a file or a metal scraper for cleaning the surface. Always use plastic tools. Never clean with chemical solvents.
Clean the contact surface of the hydraulic module.
Check whether the control module sealing is clean.
Remove the transport protection of the new control module.
Note! Watch out not to loose the leaf spring (if present) between the hydraulic module and the control module.
Carefully position the control module against the hydraulic module.
Note! Watch out that the leaf spring (if present) is fitted correctly.
Mount the torx 20 screws (6x). Tightening torque: 1st stage 3 Nm.
2nd stage turn 90° (stop before 8 Nm is reached).
Connect the lower connector (A) and fit the cables on the control module.
Reinstall the support and tighten the bolts. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
Check the central rubber in the ABS unit which has to fit over the central mounting pin (A).
Position the ABS unit in the support and firmly push the unit over the central mounting pin until the unit is in its position.
Tighten the nuts. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
Connect the connector and secure it with its locking device.
Mount both brake pipe brackets.
Caution! Watch out that all brake pipes are fitted in the mounting rubber before mounting the bracket.
Mount the power-steering fluid reservoir. Tightening torque: 10 Nm.
Position the windshield washer fluid hoses in the clips.
Position the coolant hose in the clips.
Cars with air-conditioning
Note! For cars with B4184SM engine the AC pipe attachments are not removed.
Reinstall the front AC pipe support (only valid for turbo engines)
- Carefully push the AC pipe into its original routing
- Reinstall the low pressure AC pipe to the supports.
Cars with turbo engine
- Reinstall the cover panels above the ABS unit and above the right headlamp.
Erase DTCs.
Warning! Test drive on a quiet road. Drive safely. Abide by local traffic regulations and speed limits while test driving.
Carry out a test drive with a speed of at least 40 km/h for longer than 80 seconds.
Check for correct operation of the ABS system and whether the ABS warning light goes out.
Read out and check whether DTCs are stored.
