Replacing The ABS Control Module

Removal

Preparations
Ignition off.

Removal

Thoroughly clean the ABS hydraulic modulator and the control module.





Remove:
- the hoses and hose mountings (A) on the fender liner at the control module
- the first three mounting clamps (B) for the brake pipes on the fender liner and cowl panel
- the fluid reservoir (C) for the power steering system.
- Disconnect the control module connector by pulling out the locking arm (D)
- Remove the 2 nuts (E) holding the hydraulic modulator and the control module.
The engine control module (ECM) can be detached and lifted to the side on diesel engines.

Note: Do not damage the brake pipes and the pump motor cable under the control module.

Carefully lift up the control module and ABS hydraulic modulator. The brake pipes will also come up at the same time. Do not damage the brake pipes.
Locate the 3 rubber dampers and the 2 mounting lugs.

Removing the ABS control module





- Disconnect the pump motor connector
- Remove the 6 Torx screws
- Remove the control module.

Installation

Checking the control module





Caution: The seal surfaces must not be mechanically worked using a file or scraper.
Use a plastic tool. Never clean using a solvent.

Check that:
- none of the pins or sockets on the connector are damaged
- there is no dirt on the seal surfaces between the control module and the ABS hydraulic modulator
- no part of the control module seals remain on the ABS hydraulic modulator valves.

Installing the ABS control module





- Remove the transport protection on the new control module
- Center the control module on the ABS hydraulic modulator valves before the valves are pushed into place
- Carefully position the control module
- Install the six Torx screws in the following two stages:
Tighten the screws. Tighten to 3 Nm.
Angle-tighten the screws 90°

- Note: The torque must not exceed 8 Nm.

- Connect the pump motor connector.

Installing the ABS hydraulic modulator and the control module

- Carefully lower the control module and ABS hydraulic modulator.
The brake pipes will follow at the same time. Do not damage the brake pipes
- Install the 3 rubber dampers and the 2 mounting lugs
- Tighten the 2 mounting nuts. Tighten to 25 Nm (E).





Install:
- the connector for the control module (D)
- the fluid reservoir (C) for the power steering system
- the mounting clamps (B) for the brake pipes.
Ensure that the brake pipes are correctly positioned in the rubber mounting
- the hose mounting and the hoses (A).

Checking the function of the ABS system
Read off and erase any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Test drive according to Test driving.
Check whether any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been stored. Read off any stored DTCs.
Check whether any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been stored. Read off any stored ATF.
