Checking the stop (brake) lamp switch

Terminal

Connecting the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

Is the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to both the VIDA cart and the car and switched on?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - No Fault Found

------------------------

FAULT FOUND - Checking the response code

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the response code

- Ignition on.

- Activate the Scan Tool (ST) in MODE 2.
- Set the switch to the OFF position.
- Depress the brake pedal.
- Check that the stop (brake) lamp switch is OK by checking whether response code 1-3-2 is obtained.

Is response code 1-3-2 obtained?
- 1. Yes, response code 1-3-2 is obtained.
- 2. No, response code 1-3-2 is not obtained.
- 3. No, response code 3-1-1 is obtained instead.

Select one of the above options.

1 - No Fault Found

2 - Checking the stop (brake) lamp

3 - Checking response code 3-1-1

-------------------------------------------------

Checking response code 3-1-1
The response code is obtained when the control module receives numerous input signals within 8 ms from the same component or circuit. The fault may be due to loose connections in the terminals or a faulty component.

Continue - Checking the stop (brake) lamp

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the stop (brake) lamp

- Ignition on.
- Depress the brake pedal.

Does the stop (brake) lamp light?

Yes - Checking the power supply to the control module

No - Checking fuses

-------------------------------------------------

Checking fuses
- Check that fuse 10 the integrated relay / fusebox in the engine compartment is intact.

Is the fuse intact?

Yes - Checking the 30-supply to the fuse

No - Checking for a short-circuit

-------------------------------------------------

Checking for a short-circuit

- Ignition off.

- Check the cable between:
fuse 10 and stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 1
stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 3 (terminal 2 on cars with shift lock) and the stop (brake) lamp bulbs
stop (brake) lamp connector terminal #3 (terminal #2 on cars with shift lock) and control module connector terminal #7 for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the 30-supply to the fuse

- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between the rear socket on the fuse holder for fuse 10 in the integrated relay / fusebox in the engine compartment and ground.

The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking the voltage to the stop (brake) lamp switch

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

-------------------------------------------------

Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition off.

- Check the cable between the battery positive terminal and fuse 10 the integrated relay / fusebox in the engine compartment for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the voltage to the stop (brake) lamp switch

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the stop (brake) lamp switch.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 1 and ground.

The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking the stop (brake) lamp switch

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

-------------------------------------------------

Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition off.

- Check the cable between fuse no. 10 the integrated relay / fusebox in the engine compartment and stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal #1 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the stop (brake) lamp switch

- Ignition off.
- Connect the stop (brake) lamp switch.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 3 (terminal 2 on cars with shift lock) and ground.

The voltmeter should read battery voltage when the brake pedal is pressed down more than 5 mm.

OK - Checking the stop (brake) lamp bulbs

Not OK - Replacing the component

-------------------------------------------------

Replacing the component

- Ignition off.
- Replace with a new stop (brake) lamp switch according to Brake light switch, replacement .

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the stop (brake) lamp bulbs

- Ignition off.
- Check that the stop (brake) lamp bulbs are intact. Replace if necessary.
- Disconnect the stop (brake) lamp switch.
Connect an ohmmeter between stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 3 (terminal 2 on cars with shift lock) and ground.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - Checking the response code

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit
