Connecting the breakout box to the ABS control module





Is the breakout box connected to the ABS control module?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Connecting the breakout box

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the ABS control module.
- Check the control module and the control module connector to ensure that:
The male and female terminals are undamaged and properly attached (cannot be pressed in).
The wiring for the female terminals are securely connected.
Check in particular those terminals that are relevant to the stored diagnostic trouble code (DTC) / symptoms.
Connect adapter 951 1426 31-pin adapter 951 1426 31-Pin Adapter to the control module connector (wiring side). Connect breakout box 981 3190 Replaced by 9511428 981 3190 Replaced by 951 1428 to the adapter.

Note! ABS control module terminals 1-40 correspond to terminals 1-40 on the breakout box.

- Ignition off.
- Switch of all power consuming components, such as the passenger compartment lighting and the radio.
Connect an ohmmeter between terminal 16 on the breakout box and the battery negative terminal.









The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - No Fault FoundFault-tracing information

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit and contact resistance

Check ground terminal 31/2. Check the cable between ground terminal 31/2 and control module terminal 16 for:
an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
contact resistance according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the ground lead between the battery and the bodywork for:
an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
contact resistance according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.













Select "Continue" when the fault has been remedied.

Hint: Check after repair that the fault has been rectified.
Proceed as follows:




- Switch off the ignition.
- Switch off all power consuming components such as the courtesy lighting and the radio.








- Connect an ohmmeter between terminal 16 on the breakout box and the battery negative terminal.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0ohms.

OK - VERIFIED

Not OK - VERIFICATION FAILED

The fault should be diagnosed and remedied. Since this is not the case the fault-tracing process has failed.

- Switch off the ignition.
- Control module disconnected.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between terminals 13 and 16 on the breakout box.









The voltmeter should read approximately battery voltage.

OK - No Fault Found

Not OK - Checking fuse 23

Check that fuse 23 in the integrated relay / fusebox is intact.









Is the fuse intact?

Yes - Checking the voltage before the fuse 23

No - Checking for a short-circuit

Checking for a short-circuit
Check the cable between fuse 23 in the integrated relay/fusebox and control module terminal 15 for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Then replace the fuse.

Checking the voltage before the fuse 23




- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between the rear socket (windshield side) on the fuse holder for fuse 23 in the integrated relay/fusebox and ground.









The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows.












- Switch off the ignition.
- Disconnect the breakout box if this has not already been done.
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Switch on the ignition.
When the ignition is switched on, the control module lights the ABS warning lamp. The ABS warning lamp should go out again after approximately 4 seconds.

Hint: The lamp does not go out if the control module has detected a fault.





Is the function of the ABS warning lamp OK?
