Removing the dashboard

Preparations




- Make a note of the anti-theft radio code
- Ignition off
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.

Removing panels from the underside of the dashboard





Remove:
- the side panels to the left and right of the console
- the panel under the dashboard
- the insert from the glove compartment.

Remove:
- the wiring for the courtesy lighting
- the panel under the glove compartment from the dashboard.

Removing the combined instrument panel

Removing the ventilation vent on the driver's side
To remove the ventilation vent on the driver's side, see Replacing the ventilation vents in the dashboard Replacing Ventilation Vents In The Dashboard.

Removing the loudspeakers from the dashboard




- Carefully detach the loudspeaker grilles at the front. Use a screwdriver
- Cars with ECC: remove the sun sensor
- Lift the loudspeaker out of the dashboard. Disconnect the connector.

Removing the control panel for the heater system




Cars with MCC:
- Pull of the selector knobs. Use a small screwdriver
- Remove the front plate: Insert fingers in the holes. Pull carefully.




Cars with ECC:
- Insert a small screwdriver through the upper ventilation vent. Press up the locking pin. Carefully pull this corner of the panel forward.
Repeat on the other side.
Carefully twist out the panel from the upper corners: Use a feeler gauge or a small screwdriver)
- The selector knobs remain in place on the heater control.

Removing the console by the radio





Remove:
- the radio or the storage compartment (if applicable)
- the mounting for the heater control panel
- the lower mounting screw for the console.
Disconnect the connectors for the radio and the switches.
Remove the console.

Removing the vent panel




Angle the vents downwards slightly.
Insert a screwdriver through the grill. Press the locking lug downwards while pulling the vent panel outwards at the same time.
Remove the button for the hazard warning signal flasher: Press the locking lugs together. Press the button into the panel.
Turn the knob to the blue zone.
Remove the cable and the clamp from the vent panel.
Remove the cable from the knob.

Removing the rear center console




Remove:
- the waste paper basket
- the two screws on the reverse
- the seal and the screw at the front
- the console.

Detaching the front center console




- Remove the two screws. Pull out the ashtray
- Disconnect the connectors for the lighting and the cigarette lighter
- Remove the two screws at the rear

Cars with manual transmission:
- Slide the panel at the gear selector lever forward. Disconnect it at the rear.

Cars with automatic transmission:
- Slide the panel at the gear selector lever backwards. Disconnect it at the front.
- Disconnect the connector at the parking brake
- Remove the two screws for the parking brake lever. Move the parking brake lever to one side
- Pull the center console backwards until it releases from the dashboard.

Removing the dashboard




Remove the screws (see the illustration).

Removing the central electronic module (CEM)




Remove both the screws.
Remove the central electronic module (CEM). Let it hang from its wiring.

Disconnecting the wiring from the dashboard




- Disconnect the connectors for the combined instrument panel, the central locking system receiver, the passenger airbag module (SRS) and the glove compartment lighting
- Remove the clips securing the cable harnesses to the dashboard.

Note! The clip between the combined instrument panel and the vent panel must be cut off. Mark the position of the clip on the cable harness.

Removing the dashboard

Note! Two people are required for this operation.

- Cover the upper steering shaft cover with a cloth. This is to prevent damage
- Disconnect the dashboard and remove it
- Remove the cut-off clip
- Install a new clip on the cable harness.

Replacing the dashboard





Note! The side ventilation vents are supplied together with the dashboard.

Transferring components:
- Place the dashboard on a piece of cloth with the rear facing upwards
- Remove the distribution pipe (4 screws)
- Disconnect the SRS cable harness
- Remove the glove compartment (2 screws). Remove the lamps
- Remove the vent on the passenger side, see Replacing the ventilation vents in the dashboard Replacing Ventilation Vents In The Dashboard
- Remove the airbag unit (2 screws)
- Remove the nuts
- Remove mounting sleeve in the middle
- Disconnect the cable harness from the dashboard.
- Transfer to the new dashboard in reverse order.
Tightening torque for the screws for the SRS airbag: 9 Nm.

Installing the instrument panel




- Carefully lift the dashboard into position
- Connect the cable harnesses to the dashboard
- Install the connectors for the combined instrument panel
- Connect the connectors for the central locking system receiver, the passenger airbag module (SRS) and the glove compartment lighting.

Installing the central electronic module (CEM)




Install both the screws.

Install the screws, see the illustration.

Installing the front center console
- Press the center console forward slightly so that the mounting eyelets lock into the dashboard
- Install the parking brake lever
- Connect the connector at the parking brake

Cars with manual transmission:
- Slide the panel at the gear selector lever forward. Secure it at the rear.

Cars with automatic transmission:
- Slide the panel at the gear selector lever backwards. Secure it at the front.
- Install the two screws at the rear
- Connect the connectors for the lighting and the cigarette lighter
- Install the ashtray.

Installing the rear center console

Install:
- the console
- the seal and the screw at the front
- the two screws on the reverse
- the waste paper basket.

Installing the vent panel
Turn the knob to the blue zone.
Install the cable on the knob.
Install the cable with the clamp on the vent panel.
Install the button for the hazard warning signal flasher.
Install the vent panel.

Installing the console by the radio




Position the console.
Connect the connectors for the radio and the switches.

Install:
- the lower mounting screw for the console
- the mounting for the heater control panel
- the radio or the storage compartment (if applicable).

Installing the control panel for the heater system

Cars with MCC:
- Install the front panel
- Press the selector knobs into place.

Cars with ECC:
- Install the front panel.

Installing the loudspeakers in the dashboard
Connect the connectors. Install the loudspeakers in the dashboard.

Cars with ECC:
- Install the sun sensor.
Install the loudspeaker grilles.

Installing the ventilation vent on the driver's side




Connect the connectors to the light switch.
Install the panel. Use the two screws underneath the light switch.

Installing the combined instrument panel




- Reinstall the combined instrument panel. Install the three self tapping mounting screws which secure the combined instrument panel.




- Install the surround around the dashboard. Tighten the screws (B)
- Tighten the steering column screws to 15 Nm.

Installing the panels on the underside of the dashboard




Connect the wiring for the courtesy lighting.

Install:
- the panel under the glove compartment
- the insert in the glove compartment
- the panel under the dashboard
- the side panels to the left and right of the center console.

Final check





Note! When all components have been reinstalled and secured, proceed as follows:

- First switch on the ignition
- Connect the battery negative terminal
- Check that the SRS warning light on the dashboard goes out.

Warning! Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

- Program the radio code
- Set the clock.
