Removing The Dashboard
Special tools: 981 4071
Preparations
- Make a note of radio code.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
Removing the panels under the dashboard
Only applies to model year 2000 - cars
- Remove the lower panel on the driver's side by pressing the clip together.
Remove:
- the side panels on the center console according to Center Console Panels.
- the lower panel on both the driver's and passenger sides.
- the wiring for the courtesy lighting.
- Open the glove compartment.
Remove:
- the two screws.
- the storage compartment using a twisting movement.
Removing the combined instrument panel
- Remove the two mounting screws (A) for the steering shaft from underneath.
- Allow the steering column to sink down.
- Remove the two screws (B) from the surround. Remove the surround from the clips.
- Remove the three screws for the combined instrument panel. Remove the combined instrument panel. (Where applicable, the connectors and cable for the odometer remain in place on the combined instrument panel).
Removing the odometer cable and wiring from the dashboard (mechanical speedometer)
- Press in the catches. Slide the cable for the odometer forwards with the bracket.
- Turn the plastic bracket for the odometer cable.
Removing connectors and cables from the dashboard
- Disconnect the right connector (gray).
- Pry off the two clips. Disconnect the connector from the bracket.
Removing the fog lamp relay
NOTE: Only applies to model year - 1999 cars.
- Remove the screw and the relay.
- Slide the relay and the cable behind the dashboard.
Removing the VGLA relay (unit)
NOTE: Only applies to model year 2000- cars.
- Remove the screw and the relay.
- Slide the relay and the cable behind the dashboard.
Removing the loudspeaker from the dashboard
- Lift the loudspeaker grille at the front edge by pressing the lips forwards. Use weatherstrip tool 981 4071.
- Remove the loudspeaker grille.
- Cars with ECC: remove the sun sensor.
- Lift the loudspeaker out of the dashboard. Disconnect the connector.
Removing the control panel for the heater system
Cars with MCC:
- Pull off the selector knobs. Use a small screwdriver.
- Remove the front panel (insert fingers in the holes and pull carefully).
Cars with ECC:
- Insert a small screwdriver through the upper ventilation vent. Press up the locking pin. Carefully pull this comer of the panel forward. Repeat on the other side. Carefully twist the panel out of the upper comers. Use weatherstrip tool 981 4071.
- The selector knobs remain in place on the heater control.
Removing the radio and storage compartment
Remove:
- the radio.
- the connector and the antenna switch.
- the storage compartment if applicable.
Removing the dashboard bracket
Remove:
- four screws.
- the mounting for the heater controls.
- the storage compartment.
- the lower mountings for the bracket.
- Disconnect the connectors from the switches. Remove the bracket.
Removing the ECC unit
Hint: Cars with ECC only.
- Release the air hose from the unit.
- Disconnect the connector. Remove the unit.
Removing the ashtray assembly
Remove:
- the ashtray.
- the two screws. Pull out the bracket.
- the connectors for the cigarette lighter and lighting.
Disconnecting the mechanical control cable for the "airmix" at the end pointing towards the heater.
- Pull the outer mechanical cable out of the clip.
- Remove the inner mechanical cable from the lever (press in the catches).
Removing the (lower) panel from the A-post
- Remove the blind cover plug. Detach the panel.
Removing the central electronic module (CEM)
NOTE: Only applies to model year 2000- cars.
- Remove the two screws.
- Pull the central electronic module (CEM) to the side.
Disconnecting the wiring and the hood latch
NOTE: Only applies to model year 1999- cars.
Remove:
- the screw (A) and the hood catch with the mounting.
- the mounting nut for the fusebox. Let it sink a few centimeters.
- Disconnect the connectors from the wiring.
NOTE: Only applies to model year 2000- cars.
Remove:
- the nut and move the hood catch to one side, away from the support.
- the screw from the dashboard.
- the screw from the top of the bracket.
- the bracket.
- the connectors from the fusebox.
Removing the rear center console
Remove:
- the waste paper basket or drinks holder (if applicable) by pulling it upwards.
- the two screws on the reverse.
- the seal and the screw on the front.
- the bracket (mark the front flange).
Detaching the front center console
- Remove the two screws at the parking brake.
Cars with manual transmission:
- slide the panel forwards. Remove the panel by pulling it backwards.
Cars with automatic transmission:
- carefully remove the panel. Use weatherstrip tool 981 4071.
- Remove the bulbs.
Remove:
- the bulbs.
- the two screws on the front.
- Pull the front center console backwards slightly.
Disconnecting airbags
- Disconnect the air bag on the passenger side.
Removing the dashboard
NOTE: Two people are required for this operation.
- Remove the screws as illustrated.
- Cover the upper steering shaft cover with a cloth. This is to prevent damage.
- Disconnect the dashboard and remove it.
- Insert the wiring and the cable.
NOTE: Cars with MCC: The heater controls remain in the car.
