- Start the engine. Read off the fuel consumption value in the driver information module (DIM).
Check that the fuel consumption value is within its permitted range. The value is approximately 1-2 liters when the engine is idling.

Check the signal cable between the engine control module (ECM) and combined instrument panel terminal #B5 (#A35). Check for a short-circuit to ground. See Checking wiring and terminals.
