Condition

The transmission speed signal is transmitted by a sensor on the transmission. The transmission control module (TCM) uses the signal to determine the input shaft speed after the torque converter. This signal is used to compare the transmission speed with vehicle speed. The transmission control module (TCM) uses this comparison to calculate gear-shift timing. The engine speed (RPM) and road speed data are also utilized in modulating line pressure, lock-up function and torque reduction. The result is smooth gear-shifting. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-311 is stored if the control module registers that the signal is missing when vehicle speed is above approximately 25 km/h.

Substitute value
The transmission control module (TCM) "Emergency mode II"program has been initiated.

Possible source
- Open-circuit in the signal cable (+) or signal cable (- ).
- Short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in the signal cable (+).
- Short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable (-).
- Signal cable (+) and signal cable (-) short-circuited to each other.
- Defective input speed sensor.
- Contact resistance in the terminals.

Fault symptom[s]
- The warning lamp in the combined instrument panel flashes.
- No lock-up function.
- No adaptation of the gear slippage times at high altitude (High Altitude Compensation).
- No reduction of line pressure when gear shifting. This makes gear shifting harsher.
- No reduction of line pressure when moving the gear selector between positions P-R, N-R and N-D. This results in harsh shifting.
- No torque limiting request to engine control module (ECM) when shifting.
