Condition

Torque from the engine is reduced during some gear shifts to allow smoother gear shifting and to minimize transmission wear. This process is controlled by a torque limiting signal transmitted from the transmission control module (TCM) to the engine control module (ECM) via a cable. This cable is also used to inform the engine control module (ECM) which position the gear selector is in. This is so the engine control module (ECM) can adjust the engine speed (RPM) when a gear is engaged (R/D/3/L).
In position P/N the signal is approximately 5 V and in positions R/D/3/L the signal is almost 0 V. When the transmission control module (TCM) requests torque limiting it increases the voltage to approximately 5 V for a short time (short pulses).
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) AT-244 is stored after approximately 7.5 seconds if the transmission control module (TCM) detects that the signal is high when it should be low (positions R/D/3/L).

Substitute value
The transmission control module (TCM) "Emergency mode II"program has been initiated.

Possible source
- Short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable.

Fault symptom[s]
- The warning lamp in the combined instrument panel flashes.
- No lock-up function.
- No adaptation of the gear slippage times at high altitude (High Altitude Compensation).
- No reduction of line pressure when gear shifting. This makes gear shifting harsher.
- No reduction of line pressure when moving the gear selector between positions P-R, N-R and N-D. This results in harsh shifting.
- No torque limiting request to the engine control module (ECM) when gear shifting. This gives harsher gear shifting.
