Checking fuse no. 12 (50 A) in the engine compartment




- Ignition off.
Check that fuse no. 12 (50 A) in integrated relay / fuse box in the engine compartment is intact.









Is the fuse OK?

Yes - Checking voltage

No - Checking for a short-circuit

- Ignition off.
Connect a voltmeter between ground (0 Volts) and the rear socket on the fuse holder (windshield side) for fuse no. 12 (50 A) in the integrated relay / fuse box in the engine compartment.









The voltmeter should read approximately battery voltage.

OK - Connecting the breakout box
Checking the 30-supply to the control module

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Checking for a short-circuit
Check the cable between fuse no. 12 (50 A) and control module connector terminal: 17 for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Replace fuse 12 (50 A).

Is the breakout box connected to the ABS control module?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Connecting the breakout box

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the ABS control module.
- Check the control module and the control module connector to ensure that:
The male and female terminals are undamaged and properly attached (cannot be pressed in).
The wiring for the female terminals are securely connected.
Check in particular those terminals that are relevant to the stored diagnostic trouble code (DTC) / symptoms.
Connect adapter 951 1426 31-pin adapter 951 1426 31-Pin Adapter to the control module connector (wiring side). Connect breakout box 981 3190 Replaced by 9511428 981 3190 Replaced by 951 1428 to the adapter.

Note! ABS control module terminals 1-40 correspond to terminals 1-40 on the breakout box.

- Ignition off.
- Switch of all power consuming components, such as the passenger compartment lighting and the radio.
Connect an ohmmeter between terminal 16 on the breakout box and the battery negative terminal.









The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit and contact resistance

Check ground terminal 31/2. Check the cable between ground terminal 31/2 and control module terminal 16 for:
an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
contact resistance according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the ground lead between the battery and the bodywork for:
an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Hint: Check after repair that the fault has been rectified.
Proceed as follows:




- Switch off the ignition.
- Switch off all power consuming components such as the courtesy lighting and the radio.








- Connect an ohmmeter between terminal 16 on the breakout box and the battery negative terminal.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0ohms.

- Ignition off.
- Connect the breakout box. Check the ground plate according to Connecting the breakout box.
- Reconnect the control module.
Connect a voltmeter between terminals 19 (0 Volt) and 17 on the breakout box.









The voltmeter should read approximately battery voltage.

OK - Checking the ground terminal for the pump motor

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Checking for an open-circuit
Check the circuit before fuse no. 12 (50 A) for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.

Checking the ground terminal for the pump motor




- Ignition off.
Connect an ohmmeter between the ground terminal for the pump motor and ground.

Hint: The pump motor has a separate ground lead. This ground lead is connected to the rear edge of the pump motor and the chassis below it.





The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - Testing the function of the ABS hydraulic modulator

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Testing the function of the ABS hydraulic modulator












- Ignition off.
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
Test drive the car at a speed above 6 km/h or 15 km/h. The control module will test the valves and pump motor at 6 km/h.
Stop the car. Do not switch off the ignition.
Connect VCT 2000.
Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) status.









Is the status permanent?

Yes - Checking the control module

No - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the control module.
- Remove the existing control module. Connect the new control module according to Replacing the ABS control module Replacing The ABS Control Module , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Connect the control module
Test drive the car at a speed above 6 km/h or 15 km/h. The control module will test the valves and pump motor at 6 km/h.
Stop the car. Do not switch off the ignition.
Connect VCT 2000.
Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) status.









Is the status intermittent?

Yes - Fault-tracing information

No - Replacing the component

Checking for contact resistance and oxidation
- The cause of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was loose terminals in the control module connector.
Check the control module connector for contact resistance and oxidation. Remedy according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.





Select "Continue" when the fault has been remedied.

- The old control module was faulty.

- The old control module was OK.
Try a new ABS hydraulic modulator according to Replacing the ABS hydraulic modulator and control module Replacing The ABS Hydraulic Modulator And Control Module , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows:




- Ignition off.
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Control module connected.
Test drive the car at a speed above 6 km/h or 15 km/h. The control module tests the valves and pump motor when speed exceeds 6 km/h or 15 km/h.
Stop the car. Do not switch off the ignition.
Connect VCT 2000.
Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) status.
