2ND Gear, Selector Lever In Position D
In 2nd gear, planetary train P0 is locked by C0 and F0, connecting the input shaft directly to the intermediate shaft.
Only planetary train P1 transmits power (P2 rotates unloaded). Clutch C1 is engaged and transmits power from the input shaft, through the intermediate shaft, to the P1 ring gear.
The P1 planets tend to drive the sun wheel shaft counterclockwise. This is prevented by freewheel F1, whose outer hub is locked by brake B2.
The P1 ring gear instead forces the planets to rotate around the sun wheel, causing the P1 planet carrier to rotate at a reduced speed.
Since the P1 planet carrier and output shaft are permanently attached to each other, the output shaft will also rotate at a reduced speed relative to the input shaft. The ratio is 1.532:1 for the AW 30-40 transmission.
