Faulty Signal
Checking Ignition Spark Cylinders 1 and 2
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect all injectors.
- Disconnect ignition coils for cylinders 1 and 2.
- Install new spark plugs in ignition coils.
- Place the spark plugs against the engine.
- Operate starter motor.
- Check for a spark on the spark plugs.
If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to: Checking Engine Cooling Fan section below.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Proceed to: Check section below.
Check
- If there is a spark on cylinder 1 select alternative 1 and not cylinder 2 select alternative 2.
- Select an alternative.
Alternative 1:
^ Proceed to: Checking Cylinder 1 Signal Cable section below.
Alternative 2:
^ Proceed to: Checking Cylinder 2 Signal Cable section below.
Checking Cylinder 1 Signal Cable
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect connector from ignition discharge module (IDM) 4/38 (front).
- Ignition ON.
- Connect an electrician's screwdriver (3 W bulb at least) between ignition discharge module connector terminal 2 and ground.
- The bulb should not light.
If reading is OK:
^ Try a new ignition discharge module.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check cable between ignition discharge module 4/38 terminal 2 and engine control module (ECM) # B11 for a short-circuit to supply voltage.
Checking Cylinder 2 Signal Cable
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect connector from ignition discharge module 4/39 (rear).
- Ignition ON.
- Connect an electrician's screwdriver (3 W bulb at least) between ignition discharge module connector terminal 5 and ground.
- The bulb should not light.
If reading is OK:
^ Try a new ignition discharge module.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check cable between ignition discharge module 4/39 terminal 5 and engine control module # B13 for a short-circuit to supply voltage.
Checking Engine Cooling Fan
- Ignition ON.
- Activate engine cooling fan (FC) high-speed.
- The engine cooling fan relay should operate and the engine cooling fan should run after 3 seconds.
Yes:
^ Proceed to: Checking Malfunction Indicator Lamp Signal Cable section below.
No:
^ Proceed to: Checking Engine Cooling Fan Signal Cable section below.
Checking Engine Cooling Fan Signal Cable
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect engine cooling fan relay connector B.
- Ignition ON.
- Connect an electrician's screwdriver (3 W bulb at least) between engine cooling fan relay connector B terminal 2 and ground.
- The bulb should not light.
If reading is OK:
^ Proceed to: Checking Signal Cable Resistance section below.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check signal cable between engine cooling fan relay B2 and engine control module # A22 for a short-circuit to supply voltage.
Checking Signal Cable Resistance
- Ignition OFF.
- Wait for approx. 150 seconds (cars with immobilizer 245 seconds).
- Disconnect engine cooling fan relay connector B.
- Connect an ohmmeter between engine cooling fan relay connector B terminal 2 and ground.
- The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance.
If reading is OK:
^ Try a new engine cooling fan relay.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check signal cable between engine cooling fan relay terminal B2 and engine control module # A22 for a short-circuit to ground.
Checking Malfunction Indicator Lamp Signal Cable
- Connect the breakout box and check ground terminals.
- Connect engine control module.
- Ignition ON.
- Connect a voltmeter between connectors # 7 (# B7) and # 28 (# B28) on the breakout box.
- The voltmeter should read 0 - 2 Volts.
It reading is OK:
^ Proceed to: Checking Resistance section below.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check cable between combined instrument panel # B11 and engine control module # B7 for a short-circuit to supply voltage.
Checking Resistance
- Ignition OFF.
- Wait for approx. 150 seconds (cars with immobilizer 245 seconds).
- Breakout box connected.
- Connect an ohmmeter between connectors # 7 (# B7) and # 28 (# B28) on the breakout box.
- The ohmmeter should read approx. 25 ohms.
If reading is OK:
^ If the car has manual transmission the fault is intermittent, fault-trace.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check cable between combined instrument panel # B11 and engine control module # B7 for a short-circuit to ground.
Checking Signal Cable Load
- Connect the breakout box and check ground terminals.
- Connect engine control module.
- Ignition ON.
- Connect a voltmeter between connectors # 12 (# B12) and # 28 (# B28) on the breakout box.
- The voltmeter should read 0 - 1 Volts.
If reading is OK:
^ The fault is intermittent, fault-trace.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check cable between the engine control module # B12 and transmission control module (TCM) # B12 for a short-circuit to supply voltage.
