AW55-50 Transmission
Replacing Transmission Fluid, AW55-50
Changing Oil
Note!
Oil grade: Only ATF oil, Volvo P/N 1161540-8 (1 liter containers) may be used.
Warning!
Avoid skin contact with transmission fluid.
Conditions for Changing
The oil should be replaced only in the two following instances:
Where diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) TCM 0042 and TCM 0046 are stored, in which case the diagnostic function activates the warning lamp in the following circumstances.
The transmission control module (TCM) receives data about the operating temperature of the transmission fluid while the car is being driven. TCM 0042 is stored after an accumulated amount of time.
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM 0046 is stored if the transmission fluid temperature exceeds 150° C for more than two minutes. For cars in continuous taxi service and cars used to tow trailers extensively, oil should be changed at 75,000 km ± 5,000 km service intervals. This is to conform to the regular service program.
Warning!
The oil may be very hot if the car has just been driven. Avoid skin contact.
Draining
Remove:
- the splash guard under engine (certain versions)
- the oil plug. Drain the transmission oil.
Installing the oil plug
Use a new gasket.
Tighten the plug to 40 Nm.
Install splash guard (certain variants).
Preparing to flush the transmission
Remove the battery and the battery shelf. Remove the return hose on the control system cover.
Install a plastic plug in the connection on the cover.
Install a transparent plastic hose on the oil return hose connection.
Place a container beneath the hose to catch the oil.
Temporarily reinstall the battery shelf and the battery.
Filling with oil
Apply the parking brake. Move the gear selector lever to position P.
Fill with approximately 2 liters of oil. Start the engine and let it idle. Turn the engine off when air bubbles start to become visible in the hose.
Fill with approximately 2 liters of oil. Start the engine again and let it idle. Turn the engine off when air bubbles start to become visible in the hose.
Remove the battery and the battery shelf. Remove the hose from the connection. Install the return hose on transmission cover. Install the battery shelf and the battery.
Further filling
Fill with approximately 2 liters of oil. Apply the parking brake.
Start the engine and let it idle. Move the gear selector through all the gear positions. Wait 4- 5 seconds in each gear.
Checking the oil level
The capacity of the transmission is 7.1 ± 0.1 liters. (MAX, MIN).
Note!
After replacing the transmission, the adaptation and the "Transmission oil change" counter must be reset.
Checking the oil level
Note!
Oil grade: Only ATF oil, Volvo P/N 1161540-8 (1 liter containers) may be used.
Warning!
Avoid skin contact with transmission fluid.
Conditions
The difference between the MAX and MIN volumes is 0.2 liters. Check the oil temperature in the transmission.
At room temperature (+20 °C) the oil level is close to the MIN mark on the "cold area".
At room temperature (+20 °C) and low oil level the oil barely reaches the dipstick.
The "cold range" (+40 °C) is reached after approximately 15 minutes idling in the workshop, while the "hot range" (+80 °C) is reached after approximately 30 minutes highway driving at an air temperature above +15 °C.
Note!
The check must be carried out at an oil temperature of +80 °C. Go to vehicle communication function group 4. Select the digital display parameter. Select the parameter for the transmission oil temperature. Preparing to check the oil level
Park the car on a level surface. Apply the parking brake.
Let the engine idle.
Move the gear selector lever to position P. Move the gear selector through all positions. Wait in each position for approximately 3 seconds
Move gear selector to position P and wait approximately 2 minutes before checking the oil level.
The dipstick must be pushed down as far as possible into the dipstick tube.
Caution!
Wipe the dipstick with a nylon cloth or similar. Do not use a cloth which may leave fluff or threads.
Low level (topping up)
Top up with oil through the dipstick pipe Take account of the temperature when topping up with oil.
High level (overfilling)
Warning!
The oil may be very hot if the car has just been driven. Avoid skin contact with transmission fluid.
Warning!
The transmission must not be operated if the oil level is too high. This can cause increased operating temperatures and oil leakage.
Drain off oil
Undo the drain plug.
Allow some of the oil to drain out and reinstall the plug. Tighten to 40 Nm.
Check the level taking account of the temperature.
The oil can also be sucked out through the dipstick pipe using an oil suction syringe with a narrow gauge hose.
Note!
Strict cleanliness is important.
