Checking the stop (brake) light switch (Continued)

Checking response code








- Ignition off.
- Connect stop (brake) light switch.
- Ignition on.




- Activate Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 2.
- ON/OFF switch to the OFF position
- Depress brake pedal.
- Check whether response code 1-3-2 is returned.





Response code 1-3-2 returned?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Replacing component

- Ignition off.
- Replace bulb failure warning sensor.

Continue - Verification

Checking power supply to control module












- Ignition off.
- Stop (brake) light switch connected.
- Brake pedal up.
- Disconnect control module.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between control module connector terminal 6S and ground.









The voltmeter should read approx. 0 V.

OK - Checking signal cable resistance

Not OK - Checking for a short-circuit

- Ignition off.








- Check cable between stop (brake) light switch connector terminal 2 and control module connector terminal 6S for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.





Continue - Verification

Checking signal cable resistance












- Ignition off.
- Control module disconnected.
- Disconnect stop (brake) light switch.
Connect an ohmmeter between stop (brake) light switch connector terminal 2 and control module connector terminal 6S.









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Checking control module connector

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition off.








- Check cable between stop (brake) light switch connector terminal 2 and control module connector terminal 6S for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Checking control module connector












- Ignition off.
- Check control module connector terminal 6S for contact resistance and oxidation and remedy according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and loose connections according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
- Connect control module.
- Connect stop (brake) light switch.
- Ignition on.








- Activate Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 2.
- ON/OFF switch to the OFF position
- Depress brake pedal.
- Check whether response code 1-3-2 is returned.

Response code 1-3-2 returned?

Yes - Fault-tracing information

No - Replacing component

- Ignition off.
- The response code was not returned because of loose connections in the control module connector.

Continue - FAULT FOUND

- Ignition off.
- Try a new control module according to Replacing control module Service and Repair.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows:












- Ignition off.
- Reconnect connectors, reinstall components.
- Connect control module.
- Selector switch in OFF position.
- Ignition on.




- Activate Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 2.
- ON/OFF switch to the OFF position
- Depress brake pedal.
- Check whether response code 1-3-2 is returned.





Response code 1-3-2 returned?

Yes - VERIFIED

No - VERIFICATION FAILED

Connection of Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

Connection of Volvo ST




- Ignition off.
- Insert blue memory cassette into Volvo ST.
- Connect adapter 951 1457-5 to cable 951 1458-3.
- Connect VIDA communication lead between the adapter and the VIDA PC.

Is the data link connector (DLC) located in passenger compartment?

Yes - Connection to DLC

No - Connection to DLC

- Connect Volvo ST cable (p/n 951 1458-3) to the adapter (p/n 951 1459-1) for use in the engine compartment.
- Connect the adapter to DLC A or B, see DLC DLC.
- Connect the adapter supply lead to battery.
- Switch on Volvo ST.





Press Continue.

Continue - DONE

- Connect Volvo ST cable (p/n 951 1458-3) to the DLC in passenger compartment.
- Switch on Volvo ST.

Adjusting the stop (brake) light switch








- Adjust the stop (brake) light switch early type according to Stop (brake) light switch early type Adjustments the later type is self-adjusting.
- Ignition off.
- Connect stop (brake) light switch.
- Ignition on.








- Connect a voltmeter between stop (brake) light switch connector terminal 2 and ground.

Voltmeter should read battery voltage when the brake pedal is depressed more than 5-10 mm.

OK - Checking the stop (brake) light bulbs

Not OK - Replacing component
