Selector Shaft: Service and Repair


Gear Selector Shaft Seal, Replacement
Special tool: 9995476

- Disconnect battery ground lead.
- Unclip HO2S lead from transmission member and oil pan and open HO2S connectors.





- Disconnect rear oil pipe.
- Plug pipe ends. Mop up spillage, if any.
- Remove gear position sensor.
- Remove nut, lock washer and rubber washer from sensor.
Free sensor wiring to prevent strain on leads when sensor is removed from transmission.
- Remove sensor screw.
- Remove sensor from shaft and place to one side.





- Remove seal.
- Use screwdriver and support to pry out seal. Illustration shows removal of seal on right-hand side of transmission. Use drift handle as support for tool.
- When replacing seal on left-hand side:
remove nut and link on that side.
remove seal as described above.

Installation
- Grease new seal lightly.
- Place seal carefully on shaft with lip over shaft edges.
- If necessary, use small screwdriver to lift lip over edges (seal may easily be damaged by sharp edges).





- Install seal.
- Use drift 999 5476 to tap home.
- Install left-hand side seal. Use drift 999 5476 to tap home.
- Mount selector link on shaft and tighten to 15 Nm (15 ft lb).
- Install gear position sensor.
- Ensure that wiring is positioned correctly.





- Reconnect rear oil pipe.
- Adjust gear position sensor.
- Reconnect battery ground lead.
- Check fluid level. Grade of fluid: ATF fluid that complies with the specifications for Dexron II E and Ford Mercon or Dexron III and Ford Mercon.
