Repair painting with Volvo 3-coat pearl

To achieve the best color match when touching-up cars with this type of paintwork, the procedure laid down in Service Manual Section 8 (80), should be supplemented with the methods described in this Service Bulletin.

Volvo 3-Coat Pearl (code 424) is a 3 component finish consisting of the following components:

- Basecoat
- Pearlshine topcoat
- 2K Clearcoat

In addition to this, 1K clearcoat is used with pearlshine topcoat to obtain a good match with the existing pearlshine coat.

To check the color match a separate sheet of metal should be test sprayed in accordance with instructions. The painted metal sheet is then compared with undamaged paintwork on the car.

Caution:
Protective clothing and equipment are necessary whenever painting materials are used.

Preparation and priming

The damaged area (A) is sanded down to the bare metal, filled and primed in the normal way, see Service Manual section 8 (80) Paint Repairwork 200, 700.

Sanding with wet and dry paper and cleaning surrounding areas

Surrounding areas (B) are sanded with wet and dry paper and wiped off with a tack-cloth.

Spraying

Spraying the damaged area with basecoat

The entire damaged area (A) is sprayed with basecoat. A small area (C), about 10 cm (4 in) surrounding the damaged area, is also sprayed to obtain a good color match.

When applying a pearlshine finish it is important that the basecoat is perfect. Small shifts in the shade of the basecoat will be amplified by the pearlshine topcoat.

Ventilate for approx. 15 minutes at room temperature.

Wipe off the sprayed area with a tack cloth.

Preparing spray painting equipment

Mix the pearlshine topcoat in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and pour into a spray gun.

Fill another spray gun with 1k clearcoat.

Both of these spray guns are used when spraying and should be in the spray booth at the same time.

Spraying with pearlshine topcoat and 1K clearcoat

Apply 1k clearcoat to surrounding areas (B) only.

Immediately afterwards apply 2 spray coats of pearlshine topcoat. The number of spray coats depends on results from the test spraying.

The first coat is applied to a small area (C), approx. 10 cm (4 in.) around the damaged area. The following coat is applied to surrounding area (B). Each coat increases the sprayed area around the damaged area a little.

Ventilate at room temperature for approx. 15 minutes between coats.

Apply a thin coat of 1k clearcoat to surrounding area (B) only, to obtain a good match with the existing pearlshine coat.

Immediately afterwards if necessary, apply a pearlshine coat to a small area (C), approx. 10 cm (4 in.) around the damaged area and to surrounding area (B). The 1K clearcoat absorbs the paint dust from the pearlshine topcoat.

Ventilate at room temperature for approx. 30 minutes before the final application of 2k clearcoat.

2K Clearcoat

Clearcoat the damaged and surrounding areas according to Service Manual section 8 (80) Paintwork 200, 700.
