Exhaust Manifold: Service and Repair
EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, REPLACEMENT
1. Remove front exhaust pipe
- Remove nuts in manifold joints.
2. Remove heat shield
- Remove retaining bolts (twelve).
- Remove shield.
3. Remove exhaust manifolds and gaskets
- Inspect surfaces of joints with cylinder head and front exhaust pipe
- Clean joint surfaces.
- Inspect studs (tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)) and nuts (tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)).
Replace as required.
4. Install exhaust manifolds
- Use new gaskets.
- Tighten manifolds to cylinder head.
Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Mount lifting lug on studs between 3rd and 4th exhaust branches.
- Use joint sealing compound part No. 1 161035-9, or equivalent.
5. Install heat shield
- Bolt shield to rear manifold.
Tighten to: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
6. Install front exhaust pipe
- Tighten bolted joints with manifolds.
Tighten to: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) (10 mm) or 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) (8 mm).
- Use thread locking compound.
NOTE:
^ Undo bolted joint after catalytic converter and retighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
^ This is necessary to prevent stresses in the system.
7. Check operation
Start engine.
- Inspect for leaks
