Touch-up of Volvo 3-coat Pearl finish
To achieve the best possible color matching when touching up paintwork on cars with
this finish, the procedure described in the above referenced Service Manual, should be
complemented by the instructions given below.
Volvo 3-coat Pearl is a three-component finish consisting of:
- base coat
- pearl top coat
- two component clear coat
Note:
To assure exact color matching. it is recommended that a test panel be painted as described in the instructions and compared with the existing, undamaged paintwork on the car.
The material required is listed in the table below.

Protective eyewear should be worn.
Preparation and priming
Grind repair area (A) down to bare metal (A), fill and prime in the normal manner as described in service manual.
Wet-sanding and cleaning of adjoining surfaces
Wet-sand adjoining surfaces (B) with fine-grade wet emery cloth and dry with "Tac-Rag".
Painting
Application of base coat
Repair area (A) must be covered completely with base coat. Also paint small area (C), approx. 10 cm all around repair area, to ensure color matching.
It is essential that base coat be perfect when applying pearl top coat Minor variations of shade in base coat will be exaggerated by the pearl finish.
Allow to dry for approx. 15 minutes at room temperature.
Wipe painted surface with "Tac-Rag".
Preparation of spraying equipment
Mix pearl coat as per manufacturer's instructions and fill one spray gun.
Fill second spray gun with one-component clear coat.
Note:
Both spray guns are used in the same operation and must be available in the spray booth at the same time.
Application of pearl top coat and one-component clear coat
Apply one-component clear coat to adjoining areas only (B).
Apply two coats of pearl finish Immediately:
Apply first coat to small area (C) approx. 10cm all around repair area. Apply next coat to adjoining areas (B). Extend area of application gradually as each coat is applied (actual number of coats will depend on results of preliminary color/shade tests).
Allow to dry for approx. 15 minutes at room temperature between applications.
Apply thin coat of one-component clear coat to adjoining areas (B) only, to promote top coat flow.
Apply top coat immediately, as required, to small area (C) approx. 10 cm all around damaged area and to adjoining areas (B). Spray mist from pearl coat will be absorbed by one-component clear coat.
Allow to dry for approx. 30 minutes at room temperature before finally applying two-component clear coat.
Two-component clear coat
Apply two-component clear coat to repair area and adjoining areas as described in Service Manual referenced on page 1.
