Ignition Relay: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The ignition coil relay supplies current to all six ignition coils. Its primary function is to remove ignition "noise" from the electrical system.

LOCATION
Attached to the left front strut tower.

NOTE: The main relay and the ignition coil relay are identical. Check relay wiring to determine which relay you are dealing with.
The main relay wires are:
Red
Blue/Yellow
Green/Red
Black
The ignition coil relay wires are:
Red
Green/Orange
Black
Black



OPERATION
Battery voltage is applied to terminal 4 at all times. Terminal 2 is grounded at all times. When the ignition switch is turned "ON", voltage is applied to terminal 1 which activates the relay. Current is then available to the ignition coils via terminal 3.
