Removal

NOTE: Special Tools Required: 5284.

VEHICLE PREPARATION:

Battery Ground Lead:




1. Disconnect battery ground lead.

Fan Shroud & Pulley:




2. Remove the following:
- cooling fan.
- clamp for preheater hose, below fan shroud (optional).
- fan shroud.
3. Remove drive belts and pump pulley:
- loosen adjustments.
- remove all drive belts.
- remove coolant pump pulley.

Upper Timing Gear Cover:




4. Remove upper timing gear cover:

1 10mm socket M 6 bolt
2 12mm socket M 8 bolt
3 Phillips screwdriver sheet metal screw

TIMING BELT REMOVAL PROCEDURE:



1. Set camshaft and crankshaft according to markings:
- Use center bolt to rotate crankshaft. Set camshaft so that marking on pulley is opposite marking on inner timing gear cover and crankshaft marking opposite O on cover.
- Remove distributor cover and check that rotor is opposite marking.

Counterhold Tool #5284:




2. Remove vibration damper:
- Remove belt tensioner nut and washer. Install tool 5284.
- Use the nut to retain it.
- Remove bolt for vibration damper.
- Remove tool 5284.
- Check/adjust O-marking.
- Remove vibration damper.

Lower Timing Gear Cover:




3. Remove lower timing belt cover:
1 10 mm socket M 6 bolt
2 12 mm socket M 8 bolt

Depressing Tensioner Spring:




4. Remove timing belt:
- Pull on timing belt to depress tensioner spring. Use a 3 mm drill to lock tensioner spring. Remove timing belt.

CAUTION: Do not rotate crankshaft or camshaft. Pistons may strike valves.

Timing Belt Tensioner:




Check Timing Belt Tensioner:
1. Rotate tensioner roller and listen for abnormal noises from bearing. Check that contact face against belt is free from cracks and rubber deposits.

Assembling Belt Tensioner:




Replacing Belt Tensioner:
1. Remove belt tensioner.
- Pull it straight out.
- Assemble and secure new belt tensioner
- Use a vice. Use a 3 mm drill to lock spring.
