O. Gear Selector Assembly Repair/Replacement
O. Gear selector assembly (models to 92 inclusive)
Replacement of lock button
O1
Remove lock button.
Grip left-hand side of button with pliers and pull straight upward.
Install new button.
Press button into position, ensuring that it is securely held by catches on push rod.

Removallreinstallation of gear selector knob
Pull the gear shift lever knob and lock button directly upwards off the lever.
Note that considerable force is required to remove knob.

Reinstall gear selector knob and lock button.
Ensure that knob is correctly positioned and is securely seated in snap catches.
Ensure lock button is securely seated in catches on push rod.

Replacement of light moulding
Remove:
- Negative battery lead.
- Center console as per L3-L4 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Lampholder.
Cut off retaining clips with snippers. Take care that the plastic mounting pins are not damaged.
Install:
- Install new moulding and new clips.
- Lampholder.
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of indicator panel, shutter
Remove:
- Negative battery lead.
- Gear shift lever's knob as per O2
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
Remove panel and shutter.
Depress catches at front edge of panel and lift slightly.
Prise catches outward, and remove panel and shutter.

Reinstall new shutter and panel.
Install shutter. Check that the indicator is on correct side of lever.
Install:
- The panel. Start at rear edge and press into position in middle. Finally, press home catches at front edge.
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift lever's knob as per O3
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of lock function
Remove:
- Negative battery lead.
- Gear shift lever's knob as per O2
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
Remove locking mechanism
Use needle-nose pliers to remove detent. Remove push rod, guide and spring. If necessary, use a thin, bent welding rod to lift hook and spring.

Reinstall locking mechanism.
Lubricate lower section of push rod, the guide and spring with grease, P/N 11614137-7 (USA, Canada).
Install spring, the guide and push rod. Press down push rod and insert detent in end.

Install:
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift lever's knob as per O3
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of gear shift lever and mechanism
Remove:
- Negative battery lead.
- Gear shift lever knob
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
Disconnect cable from lever and from selector housing.
Remove:
- Lampholder from light moulding.
- Cable end pin
- Clip
- Gear shift mechanism from the car
NOTE: Take care that the cable is not damaged.

Remove gear shift lever.
Remove the key lock function as per O7.
Use drift to tap out lever spindle and remove gear shift lever.

Grease the gear shift lever and gear lever assembly PIN 1161417-9, (1161437-7 USA, Canada)
- Locking pin and spring in lever
- Shaft and shaft hole.
- Ratchet plate in the mechanism.
Reinstall:
- Gear shift lever. Tap in shaft with a drift.
- Detent locking function as per O3
O13
Install gear selector assembly
Insert gear selector cable in gear selector assembly
NOTE: Take care that the cable is not damaged.
Ensure that rubber bushings are seated in the guide sleeves.
Torque to 25 Nm (15 ft. lbs).
Reconnect cable in gear shift assembly.
- Locking clip
- Cable end pin
- Lampholder.
Reinstall:
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift lever's knob as per O3
- Battery negative lead.
