Air Injection Pump: Description and Operation

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System:





PURPOSE
The air pump provides fresh air to the air injection system.

CONSTRUCTION
The air pump contains an electric motor which drives two blower wheels, one to draw air in, the other to force air into the system. The pump has a filter to prevent dirt and water from entering the system.

OPERATION
The air pump is controlled by the ECM via the the air pump relay. The AIR system starts approximately 20 seconds after engine start-up and operates for 45 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on coolant temperature.
