Accessing Via Scan Tool (ST)
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off before disconnecting or connecting Scan Tool or disconnecting or connecting a connector or the test box to a control module. The Volvo System Tester (ST) is used in the USA and Canada for diagnostic testing and reading of fault codes. The flowcharts for the Diagnostic Key are in principle suitable, even for the Volvo System Tester.
Connecting the ST:
ST, part number: 998 8670.
Memory module, Swedish: 951 1411.
ST lead: 951 0040.
Test box: 981 3190.
Adapter: 981 3194.
- Insert memory module in ST. (Check you are using the right memory module.)
- Connect ST connector to connector terminal A or B (gray or black).
- Connect battery cables to battery, red to + terminal.
- Switch ignition on.
- Scroll down to: A7 COMB. INSTR.
- Go into DTM required (see flowchart below).
- For details of DTMs, Diagnostic Test Modes
There are diagram-type menus to show you how to use the ST.
Symbols Used In ST Menus:
- Text in frame = Text in display.
- Star in light circle = Press *button on ST briefly. Goes to next step in program.
- Star in bold circle = Press *on ST and hold down. Goes back a step in program.
- Ringed arrow = Pressing cursor keys scrolls forwards or backwards in text.
ST Flowchart:
DTM 1 (Self Test):
- Shows DTCs posted.
- The instrument panel diagnostic system can record 7 different types of fault.
- The control module holds DTCs in a memory. They will be saved even if the battery is disconnected for any length of time.
Reading off DTCs:
- Use this DTM to find out if any input signals to the instrument panel are missing or the speedometer data signal leads are faulty.
- Speed data is something the instrument panel sends to a lot of other systems, such as the trip computer, engine management system and automatic gearbox.
- For explanation of DTCs,
- DTCs are displayed in the order in which they were posted. Once all DTCs have been displayed, they appear again in the same order.
Erasing DTCs:
DTCs cannot be erased until all DTCs have been displayed at least once, i.e. once the first DTC appears a second time.
Checking that DTCs are erased:
- Switch ignition off and on again, then check that all DTCs have been erased. If code 1-1-1 appears, all DTCs have been erased.
DTM 3 (Function Test):
Testing sensor signals.
- Connect ST (see above).
- Follow instructions on display.
- See flowchart, DTM 3. (image)
DTM 4 (Settings):
Resetting service counter and changing transmission speed.
- Connect ST (see above).
- Follow instructions on display.
- See flowchart, DTM 4. (image)
DTM 5 (Reading Off Data):
Settings for service reminder lamp and adjustment time, Tables/Charts Connect ST as instructed above.
- Follow instructions on display.
- See flowchart DTM 5. (image)
DTM 6 (Entering Data):
CAUTION: The odometer can only be programmed once per instrument panel so make sure you have entered the mileage correctly before confirming it.
Entering data when installing new instrument panel and changing service parameters, DTM 6 (Entering Data)
- Connect ST (see above).
- Follow instructions on displays.
