Integral child seat, replacement of cables in folding mechanism
If the child seat/armrest becomes difficult to retract, the cables in the folding mechanism may be worn and in need of replacement. The replacement procedure for the 854 and 855 models is described in this bulletin.
The cables and other necessary components are included in a kit consisting of the items listed below. Note that all of the components in the kit must be installed.
Different child seats were installed in the 854 and 855 up to and including 1994; however, the same seat is used in both 1995 variants. Only the 855 child seat will henceforth be stocked as a spare for the 854/855
Material kit:
Material kit, P/N 9160091-6, must be used for all 855s, and for 854s from 1995 models on.
The kit includes:
- Leaf spring (1)
- Locking pin without snap ring groove (2) (snap ring has been eliminated)
- Pop rivet (4)
- Cable for tensioner (black) (5)
- Cable between backrest and seat (6)
Cable, P/N 9160526-1 (7), need be replaced only on 1993 and 1994 854s.
TOOL REQUIRED: Pop rivet gun
NOTE

** All 854s and 855s
REMOVAL OF CHILD SEAT
- Remove screws (two) securing child seat to sides of rear seat backrest
- Lift child seat straight up
** All 854s and 855s
Remove cover panel
** 854, 1995- 855, all
Drill out pop rivet (4) using 3.5 mm (9/64") bit
** 854, 1995- 855, all
Remove and discard:
- snap ring from pin (2) (snap ring is installed only on earlier models)
- pin (2)
- leaf spring (1) from cable (5)
- cable (5)
** All 854s and 855s
Remove seat cover by lifting at corners to release clips (A) from frame.
NOTE
Do not bend edge of cover excessively. This may cause edge to bend or break.
** All 854s and 855s
FIXING OF SEAT HALVES
- Push seat halves together until holes in each half are aligned.
- Insert pin (e.g. drill bit) in holes to fix halves in position.
- Remove screw (A) securing seat to base.
NOTE
Use 5 mm Allen key inserted in holes in seat halves. Move halves sideways until screw is visible.
** All 854s and 855s
Remove:
- child seat halves by lifting carefully straight up, leaving spindle and spindle bracket on underside in position
- spring legs from retaining lugs
NOTE
Hold both seat halves firmly.
** All 854s and 855s
Remove:
- upholstery from lower section of child seat backrest (arrowed in illustration), where cable is located, by prying out plastic tab securing fabric
- cable from attachment wheel at lower rear edge of backrest on right-hand side
** All 854s and 855s
REMOVE PLASTIC GUIDE
- Press down baseplate until guide is clear of holes in plate
NOTE
Insert tip of heavy screwdriver behind guide as illustrated and pry to free guide.
** All 854s and 855s
Remove/disconnect:
- spring and cable from seat frame
- cable from spring
** All 854s and 855s
Install/insert:
- cable clip provided with hole on spring so that clip at center of cable is positioned as indicated by heavy arrow in upper illustration.
- cable through hole in seat frame and under tube at rear edge of seat
- spring legs at each side of guide post, with yellow-marked leg uppermost and pointing in same direction (A) as dip on cable
Important!
Spring must be installed with yellow leg A positioned above unmarked leg B.
** All 854s and 855s
Install guide with cable passing between locating pins.
NOTE
Ensure that pins are seated in holes in baseplate. Use heavy screwdriver (as illustrated) to bend down plate carefully.
** All 854s and &55s
Attach cable to attachment wheel on backrest
Seat flat end of cable lug in hole in wheel while pressing cable into groove.
** All 854s and 855s
Fold backrest back as far as possible
Install:
- seat halves with spindle in position and spindle bracket facing front edge of seat
- yellow-marked spring leg in left-hand retaining lug - unmarked spring leg in right-hand retaining lug
NOTE
Pin (drill bit) used to lock seat halves together should be removed while installing spring.
- adjust spindle to ensure that it is positioned within seat frame when seat halves are in place.
- seat halves in seat frame
NOTE
Complete child seat can be tilted back slightly to facilitate installation of spindle bracket and screw.
Important!
Spring must be installed with yellow leg A positioned above unmarked leg B.
** All 854s and 855s
Insert and tighten screw in spindle bracket. Use magnetic tool.
Remove pin (drill bit) used to lock seat halves together.
Important!
- Press seat halves together and check that they move
- easily under spring force without lifting.
- Test folding function.
** 854, 1995- 855, 1993-
Install/insert: (with backrest folded up)
- cable lug in slot at rear edge of seat (1)
- cable through eye in second cable (2)
- cable and ball in slot in leaf spring (3)
** 854, 1995- 855, 1993-
Mount spring, with cable inserted in slot, on pin so that pop rivet (4) can be passed through hole.
Important!
Spring is delicate and must not be subjected to high stress
Secure pop rivet with rivet gun.
Test fold-down and locking functions.
** All 854s and 855s
Tuck upholstery in under lower section of backrest.
Secure seat cover with clips.
** All 854s and 855s
Install cover panel.
** All 854s and 855s
Install:
- seat by lowering straight into position until it engages hooks
- insert screws and tighten to 10 Nm (7 ft.lbs) (Illustration shows 855 seat)
Check operation.
