Section D - Sunroof Motor

NOISE FROM THE SUNROOF MOTOR

This section describes how to repair noise which occurs when the sunroof motor starts and/or operates the sunroof.

TICKING NOISE

OCCURS:

Cars with chassis numbers before

854, approx. 200000

855, approx. 100000

(Concerns component 13, see sunroof components).




^ Usually this noise is heard from the front edge of the sunroof when it is operated or when the car is being driven.

^ When the drive cables knock on the outer sheaths.

^ when there is insufficient grease.

ANALYSIS METHOD:

^ Listen at the front corner of the sunroof while it is being operated forward or backward.

^ Check that the plastic pipes are not split or broken.

^ Check that the outer sheaths are not split or broken.

ACTION:

- Install textile tape if the outer sheaths are contacting each other or nearby components.

- If the noise persists, remove the inner panel and roof at the door according to the service manual.

- Replace the outer cable sheaths with new ones as described in the service manual.

- Reinstall sunroof according to service manual.

- Reinstall panels according to service manual.

- Test drive and check that the noise has stopped.




- Replace the plastic pipes if necessary.

- Replace the outer sheaths if necessary.

- Replace the drive cables (usually plastic cables) if necessary, according to the service manual: Section 8 (82-86, 88) Interior, exterior 850- 1993-)

METALLIC NOISE AT THE MOTOR

OCCURS:

^ Usually when the motor starts or stops.

(Component 6 in the illustration sunroof components).

ANALYSIS METHOD:




^ Remove the cover panel and check that the screws holding the motor in place are tightened to 2 Nm (1.5 ft. lbs).

^ Check that the motor is securely in place.

ACTION:

- Install new screws (P/N 969478-7) and washers (P/N 191156-9). tighten screws to 2 Nm (1.5 ft. lbs).
