Additional Interior Noise Locations

VIBRATING NOISE FROM THE REMOTE CONTROL RECEIVER FOR THE ALARM.

Mostly affects cars with chassis number:
850 030700 - approx. 038000

Procedure:

Remove the glovebox (refer to operation A1).




Release the receiver unit (8 mm socket).

The receiver unit is located between the glovebox and the cowl member, attached to a bracket with one screw (see illustration).

Use foam plastic sheet on the lower section of the unit on the side facing the firewall.

If there is already foam plastic in place and the noise persists add an additional layer over the existing layer.


Noise from the dashboard cover panel
(First refer to operation A20)

A9

SQUEAKING/SQUEALING NOISE FROM THE EDGES AGAINST THE UNDERSIDE OF THE DASHBOARD. MOST FREQUENTLY OCCURS AT TEMPERATURES OVER 68°F (+ 20°C).
Mostly affects cars with chassis number up to:

854 - 105700
855 - 017550

Procedure:




Remove the cover panel (refer to SRS Service Manual Section on passenger airbag replacement method.)

Apply anti-squeak tape, p/n 3537385-1, on the lower outer edges of the dashboard cover panel (both left and right side).

SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN THE TOP FRONT PART OF DASHBOARD (DEFROSTER VENT) CHAFES AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD.

Procedure:

Loosen the screws at the A pillar (2 screws).




Press the dashboard downwards. The dashboard should not contact the windshield.

Tighten the screws while holding the dashboard down.

Noise from air duct

WIRES VIBRATING AGAINST THE SOUNDPROOFING AIR DUCT ON PASSENGER SIDE.

Mostly affects cars with chassis numbers up to:
854 045044

Procedure:

Remove soundproofing panel.




Stick foam plastic onto the air duct (see illustration).

Noise from combined instrument area (First refer to operation A20)

VIBRATION NOISE FROM BURRS ON THE BACK OF THE FRAME ON THE COMBINED INSTRUMENT COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE GLASS FRONT.

Mostly affects cars with chassis numbers up to:
854 - 057000

Can occur at engine idle on cars with automatic transmission in Drive and A/C turned on.

Procedure:




Remove the dashboard cover panel and the combined instrument (refer to SRS Service Manual on passenger airbag replacement method).

File the burrs down.

SQUEAKING NOISE IN THE AREA WHERE DASHBOARD COVER PANEL MEETS THE WOOD TRIM ON INSTRUMENT FRAME.

Procedure:




Remove dashboard cover panel.

Tape area on cover panel that is in contact with wood trim. Use teflon tape, p/n 1161410-4.

GUIDE PINS ON THE COMBINED INSTRUMENT UNDERSIDE HAVE EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THEIR BUSHINGS, RESULTING IN CONTACT BETWEEN THE DASHBOARD AND THE COMBINED INSTRUMENT GLASS.

Mostly affects cars with chassis numbers up to:
854 - 060000

Procedure:

Remove the dashboard cover panel and the combined instrument.




Apply foam plastic to the front of the pins.

CREAKING NOISE FROM RIGHT SIDE OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT UNDER COMBINED INSTRUMENT RUBBING AGAINST AIR DUCT (LEFT VENT).

Procedure:

Remove dashboard cover panel and combined instrument.




Make clearance between air duct and steel reinforcement using heat gun on air duct.

WARNING:
Use extreme caution when heating air duct. Apply heat to air duct only enough to provide clearance.

WIRES VIBRATE AGAINST THE COMBINED INSTRUMENT. MOSTLY AFFECTS 1993 MODELS.
CAN OCCUR AT ENGINE IDLE ON CARS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE AND A/C TURNED ON.

Procedure:

Remove the dashboard cover panel and combined instrument.

Fasten all wiring or loose wiring mounting tape that might contact the combined instrument using antisqueak tape, p/n 3537385-1.

CLICKING/CRACKING NOISE BETWEEN THE CLIMATE CONTROL MIXING BOX AND THE ADHESIVE STRIP ON THE DASHBOARD.

Mostly affects cars with chassis numbers up to:

854-094500
855-009350

Can occur at engine idle on cars with automatic transmission in Drive and A/C turned on.

Procedure:

Remove the heater control panel.

Note:
The control panel is fastened with two screws on cars with manual climate units (MCC). On cars with automatic ECC units the control panel is retained only by spring clips in the rear bottom of control module.




Drill a 5 mm (3/16") diameter hole in the surround about 30 mm from the left corner and about 7 mm in.

Cut out the surround from the hole (about the center of the surround).

Unscrew the mixing box from the dashboard.

Bend the tongue down and apply anti-squeak tape, p/n 3537385-1, (see illustration). Rebend and reinstall bolt.


NOISE FROM LOUDSPEAKER GRILLES

Squeaking from between the dashboard cover panel and the loudspeaker grille.

Mostly affects cars with chassis numbers up to:
854-030814

Usually occurs at temperatures over 68°F (+ 20°C.)

Procedure:

Remove the loudspeaker grille.




Apply anti-squeak tape, p/n 3537385-1, to all surfaces that can contact other surfaces.

NOISE FROM THE A PILLAR PANEL

A19

The A pillar panel contacts the windshield because it is too tightly mounted.

Procedure:
(Refer to Interior Service Manual.)

Remove:

- interior B pillar panel
- clips (red) inside the B pillar panel
- interior A pillar panel




Remove the clip moulding screws. Remove clip moulding. Enlarge bottom screw hole 2 - 3 mm, towards the windshield (if this has not been done already).

Press the clip moulding back in to place.

Tighten the screws while pressing the clip molding towards its rear most position.

Install panels and check play.

SQUEAKING NOISE FROM THE TICKET HOLDER. (THE NOISE CAN APPEAR TO ORIGINATE FROM THE DASHBOARD).

Procedure:

During test drive pull the ticket holder towards you.

If the noise persists (it does not come from the ticket holder), refer to operations A9, A10, A12, A13.

If the noise disappears while the ticket holder is pulled towards you:

Remove the A pillar panel (refer to operation A19)




Apply anti-squeak tape, p/n 3537385-1, to all contact surfaces on the ticket holder.


NOISE FROM THE CENTER CONSOLE

The lid on the center console rattles due to excessive play in the hinges.
Mostly affects cars with chassis numbers up to:

854 - 080578
855 - 004403

Procedure:

Open the center console storage compartment.




Adjust by pressing the hinges together with a pair of pliers.
Noise from the climate unit (ECC) in door sensor

THE ECC SENSOR IN THE HEADLINER UNDER THE GRAB HANDLE CAN PRODUCE A CONTINUOUS HIGH FREQUENCY TONE.

Applies to cars with chassis numbers up to:

854 - 075098
855 - 002049

Procedure:
(Refer to Interior Service Manual.)

Remove: (on affected side)

- interior A pillar panel
- interior B pillar panel
- sun visor
- grab handles front and rear

Carefully release the headliner downwards.




Unscrew the sensor using an angle TORX� 25.
Replace with new sensor.

For cars chassis numbers 046826 and above use:

p/n 9144336-6 (left side)
p/n 9144337-4 (right side)

For cars below chassis number 046826 use:
grille p/n 9137439-7 and sensor 9144336-6 (left side)
grille p/n 9137439-7 and sensor p/n 91443374 (right side)


NOISE FROM COWL AREA
(First refer to operation A2O)

SQUEAKING NOISE APPEARING TO COME FROM THE INTERIOR. COWL PLATE RUBBING AGAINST LOWER WINDSHIELD TRIM.

Procedure:

Remove cowl plate.
Clean contact surfaces carefully.




Apply felt tape on cowl along edge which contacts lower windshield trim.

A24

Squeaking noise appearing to come from the interior. The bolts that hold the dash to the firewall under the cowl plate are loose.

Procedure:

Remove cowl plate.
Tighten bolts, as necessary.
